or a long time people have always said that consoles are a better investment than a gaming PC due to what you get for your money. This generation of consoles has seen two higher priced systems and computer prices keep going down. What I want to show, is what you do get for your money and which is the better bet…

The PS3: $600
HiDef Gaming (with compatible TV)
BlueRay Player (with $30 a pop movies)

Okay, so what about in the PC world? Lets go see what Dell can give us for $600…
Well, for $614 we can get a Dimension E521 with the following:
Athlon XP 3500
1GB Ram
80GB HD
CDRW/DVD
256 MB NVIDIA Geforce 7300LE
17″ LCD
Windows XP Media Center

The result: for right at $600 you can get a gaming machine that will play all of todays modern games at medium settings. Elder Scrolls looks really good at these settings. You also have a really large library of games from $10-$60 for this system. If you want JUST a gaming experience and nothing else, the PS3 might be the better option once there are more games, but if you need even a bit else, the PC wins here.

The Xbox 360: $400
HiDef Gaming (with the right TV again)
Great online (at a cost)

Lets see what Dell can do for us again…
Well, for $384 dollars we get the following:
AMD Sempron 3400+
1GB RAM
80GB HD
CDRW/DVD
Geforce 6150LE

The choice here is a bit tricker. The integrated video isn’t going to play modern games at even medium and the 360 has some really strong titles out that can probably be picked up used for a few bucks less. If gaming is the main reason for the $400 go with the PC, but if you want games at all, go with the 360 here. It is the better buy.

The Wii: $250
New Game Play style
One game: WiiSports

Well, there are no Dell computers for $250. In fact, no one makes a new computer for that price, so the Wii wins no matter what

The full conclusion:
The PS3 isn’t worth the money right now, there just aren’t enough games. Maybe down the road, but right now go buy the Dell. The Xbox 360 is worth it if you want mostly gaming. The price is right and the games are coming down thanks to used offerings (though the Dell at $400 is impressive). Lastly, the Wii. It is the best option for the price (so go buy one already).

Then again PCs aren't solely for gaming and have a bunch of other things you can do with them. Since they aren't so completely devoted inpurpose even by nature the console will often be the better bet. Besides, how can you use Dell to compare them? From what I've seen Dell'sprimary service is custom PCs and while preconfigured systems are just lovely and they probablyhave a price guideline set out for you, is that $600 PC something off the shelf or something you put together for an example using the best gaming parts that money can buy?
