Frustrating but true.
Valve has added in-game advertising to Counter-Strike 1.6. They can be seen in default maps (AFAIK dust and dust2 so far) and on the scoreboard and spectator modes.

Currently, most ads are for Valve-related games but Intel has jumped into the action with ads for Core 2 Extreme processors.

Some people have noticed lag upon spawning, where the game contacts the adservers to update the ads and display new ones.

Have you seen them? What is your take on implementing advertising on games long after their release?

Valve doesn't support 1.6 anymore so they can do whatever they want with it now so people change to css like the big clans do

i agree, 1.6 is a none-supported platform...they want people to get css, so they make 1.6 their ad platform...

1.6 has just been chosen, for the reasons Kris said; I tend to use Source for advertising I spray the iVirtua web address everywhere and it works

Other games have done this, Anarchy Online is the first that comes to mind. Might we see a free ad supported 1.6 in the future?

In game ads are nothing new

http://www.massiveincorporated.com/
are an advertising agency that specialises in this... vending machines for instance, in games. (Imagine them in Counter Strike Source )

Massive has served over eleven million game sessions, and the gamer feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

Extensive research conducted by Massive IncorporatedSM and play testing amongst gamers concluded that over 90% of gamers do not mind advertising in video games.

The following feedback was taken directly from our Publisher Partners’ Web sites. Gamers care about their games – and the advertising in them.

Quote:
“I love the idea of having actual advertisements in a game instead of fake, made-up companies. I’ve always wondered why more games didn’t try to do this.”

"I would like seeing a Coke machine, or a Pepsi machine, or (in this case) one that reads Diet Sprite. That's what it looks like in real life.”

“I think the ads are cool as long as they make sense…the soda machine looks awesome.”

“I think the in-game advertising initiative is brilliant. I play quite often and find the billboards enhance the reality of the game, are completely unobtrusive and dynamic.”
