I'm hearing these don't offer much performance over or anywhere close to the Core Duo 2 aka Conroe. Can anyone confirm this?

Unfortunately, yes.
I love AMD, and will to the bitter end.  But I must admit that C2D has any AMD processor beat currently.

Intel definitely has AMD beat when it comes to performance, but AMD's CPU's are very competitively priced.

Only AMD's Native Quad's can get them right back into the performance race. But that said, they are selling there AM2's off the shelves though. And DELL wants more, and AMD can't seem to get enough of them out the door.

Yeah, its true that dell are buying SO many AMD chips its insane but the new intel chip destroys it really, as far as im aware the only thing AM2 has over 939 is power efficiency, correct me if im wrong, but its basically 939 chips in a more effecient platform, and the majority of 939 chips are pretty slow now and certainly not cost effective compared to core 2 duo. Check www.tomshardware.com for CPU benchmarks
