Average Gamer's Age: Higher Than You Think

The Entertainment Software Association filed its newest Essential Facts report today. Just how old is the average gamer?

The ESA reported today that the average video game player's age is 33 years old.

Surprisingly, 25% of the people that filled out ESA's survey were over 50 years old. It's important to realize that although video game systems have traditionally been marketed toward younger people, the older gamers get, the more discretionary spending they can afford.

As the current generation of gamers gets older, these statistics will continue to reflect the changing face of video gaming. Perhaps as pro gaming becomes more mainstream, we'll see more and more older gamers competing as well.

I think thats a little wrong, my local LAN centre wouldn't survive if he didn't break the law and let underaged gamers play counter strike (16+), most people in there are under 18, maybe 20 at the most, but ,maybe its the atmosphere in there? I'm not sure, but it seems different to me, GTA is an 18, how many of its players are under 18?

That could be true there does seem to be a few adult gamers around where ever you look. Im 28 and im still a gamer. I am sure there are quite a few more out there that are way older. I think computer gaming is usally a more adult thing while consoles like Nintendo are usally more to the younger crowd. I don't see anything wrong with adults who game after all most of us are just a kid  at heart.

Most Games are not always designed with kids in mind; like Halo 2 or even CS. My Grandad when he got his Windows 98 PC before everyone else had the latest PC games, Motorcross madness, and Sega Rally...

Yeah, I haven't seen too many not-so-young gamers around. Virtually all the gamers I've seen (i.e. in LAN centres, shops etc.) are between 8 and 25. Some LAN centres are usually filled almost entirely with little kids (like 8 year olds) playing very violent computer games, which I don't think is illegal here - although it is illegal to go into a LAN centre on a weekday if you are under 16, or something like that.
