The unemployed computer systems administrator is accused of hacking into 97 United States military and NASA computers in 2001 and 2002. The computer networks he is accused of hacking include networks owned by NASA, the US Army, US Navy, Department of Defense and the US Air Force plus one belonging to The Pentagon. The US estimates claim the costs of tracking and correcting the problems he allegedly caused were around 700,000 USD.

Quote:
McKinnon was originally tracked down and arrested under the Computer Misuse Act by the UK National Hi-Tech Crime Unit (NHTCU) in 2002 who informed him that he would face community service. The UK prosecution service[citation needed] refused to charge him. Later that year he was indicted by the United States government. McKinnon remained at liberty without restriction for three years until June 2005 (after the UK had implemented a new extradition treaty with the US [which the US congress has not ratified]) when he became subject to bail conditions including a requirement to sign in at his local police station every evening, and to remain at his home address at night. In addition he was banned from using a computer with access to the internet. There have been no more developments in respect of the charges relating to United Kingdom legislation but in late 2005 the United States began extradition proceedings.

If he is extradited to the U.S. and charged, McKinnon faces up to 70 years in jail and has expressed fears that he could be sent to Guantanamo Bay.[1][2] He has said that he will contest the extradition proceedings and believes that he should face trial in the UK, principally as he argues that his "crimes" were committed there and not in the United States.

In an interview televised on the BBC's Click programme,[3] he claimed that he was able to get into the military's networks simply by using a Perl script that searched for blank passwords; in other words his report suggests that there were computers on these networks with the default passwords active.

There is an interview with him here; It says exclusive to .net which I did get; but I now remember reading the transcript in the FT back in June I think

Here is the Video Link: http://www.theitshield.com/vidpr/index.php?vid_pr_id=456

I think if he is prosecuted, maybe it will send a message to all other hackers, however, over the last few years (4 to be exact), he has effectively served a sentence anyway; losing his long term girlfriend; maybe that's his own fault though. There are mixed opinions about whether he should be extradited and/or charged.

I don't think the amount of damage caused is correct on each computer; but maybe the US computer military security policy is to destroy the computer in case something has been planted on it; and therefore information has been lost; so the figure may be true; in any case, even if the password for local admin was blank, he was breaching Computer Misuse Act(s) in the UK anyway.

Watch the BBC interview here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/nolavconsole/uk...l_storyid=4979716
Its better than the .net one, and 16 minutes wrong, and an interview that can speak english

Where he says he claims to have seen the domed UFo structure; I dont believe him to be honest; and Im not sure many will, it became clear that he may just be a crank; he's probably just be going over the top; maybe it's what he had wished to see, but didn't... why couldnt he get a screenshot anyway? Thats what I'd like to ask.

The unjust treatment of British citizens (and others) when facing the might of the US Military "justice" sysem, which practices detention without trial in Guantanamo Bay and elsewhere, and stands accused of making use of torture by allied regimes ("extraordinary rendition") is an ongoing scandal. It cannot be excused even by a "war on terror".

Interview Transcript; I'd recommend readin it instead of the video, it is easier to comprehend

Although Gary is not inocent and he admits this the US are just using this case as a show trail to warn other hackers, Gary should be sentenced under UK law and not US, however because bush and blair are on 'friendly tems' im sure although i dont want it to happen Gary will be sent to the US for imprisonment for 60 years + it's disgraceful and the US keep mentioning that this happened around 9/11 yes it did but gary did not collect information nor did he sell it on.

I hope Gary will not be sentenced in the USA and that he wins his EU Appeals Case.

Good luck gary, everyone should sign the petition at http://www.freegary.org.uk
