Take Two itself just issued confirmation that the movie adaptation of its undersea adventure is indeed in the works. The film will be utilizing similar green screen filming techniques as in the movie 300 to recreate the environments of Rapture
Bioshock: with great writing, an amazing visual environment, and one of theneatest twists in recent memory. It's no surprise that the game isgoing to be made into a movie, but it is somewhat shocking to see thestrength of the talent signed to develop the property. The movie willbe directed by Gore Verbinski, and written by John Logan. If thosenames don't ring a bell, the films they've worked on will:
Gore Verbinski (director)
Three Pirates of the Caribbean films
The Weather Man
The Ring
The Mexican
Mousehunt
The Ritual
John Logan (writer)
Sweeney Todd
The Aviator
The Last Samurai
Star Trek: Nemesis
Gladiator
RKO 281
In other words, there is some serious talent attached to the filmalready, and it seems like Take-Two is putting a high priority ingetting the movie made. "The reason I structured it the way I did is tomake sure it gets made," Take-Two executive chairman Strauss Zelnick told Variety.
It's hard to get excited about a movie based on a game, but havingVerbinski and Logan working on the project does give some hope. Many ofthe environments and enemies in the game already look ready for theirclose-up, so the idea of a big-screen Big Daddy is pretty exciting.
Variety reports that Universal has signed a deal to turn BioShock into a movie. Director Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean) will head the project and Aviatorwriter John Logan may write the screenplay. Take-Two executive chairmanStrauss Zelnick, who was in charge of Fox in the '90s, handled the dealfor his company and says the project will actually get made ... unlikethe Halo movie.

There's also an interviewwith Verbinski on Variety's Cut Scene blog where he discusses theproject. He believes the movie will be rated "R" and says, in terms ofthe Little Sisters, that he'll take the issue "right up to the edge,"not wanting the core audience to feel "betrayed." Though no releasedate is currently targeted, Verbinski says he'll start pre-productionwhen Logan's script is finished and approved.

"Of all the games out there, Ithink 'Bioshock' is the one that's the most engaging. I think the wholeutopia-gone-wrong story that's cleverly unveiled to players is brimmingwith cinematic potential."
Verbinski stated that he seesBioShock on the scale of Blade Runner rather than Pirates of theCaribbean, so don't expect something like the overblown antics of JackSparrow to be featured in the movie.
Instead, he's focusingthe Utopian visuals and the theme of free will. He also confirmed thathe's in talks with Ken Levine and his top priority is not to damage thefranchise with the adaptation.
The Hollywood man has increasingly expressed an interest in games development over the past few months. Speaking to the LA Times in March he called the games development model broken and that he was interested in developing emotional games.
In addition to directing BioShock, Verbinski intends to continue pursuing his own gaming projects on the side.
