can a radeon 9200 SE even come close to running half life2?...(after i get a crapload of ram first)

Yes, it can load it. My old GeForce4 MX420 (which is equivalent to a GeForce2) can run both Halo and Half Life 2 at the lowest settings. Therefore, your 9200 should have no problem (as long as you have it at the lowest resolution)

It will *run* it, but not well.

IIRC, the mininum system requirements are something like 256MB of RAM, 1.2GHz CPU and a DirectX 7 video card.

It'll run it, but you'll need to set all of the games options to low.  Even then you might see some slow-downs, but still playable.

I have two 9200SEs (one MSI and the other Sapphire) and they do fairly well.  Not a hugely powerful card by any stretch of the imagination, but good enough.  You might want to get your hands on an old cpu fan (the old PIII fans work nicely) and rig it up to the passive heatsink on the card.  Both of mine are passive, so I try to keep them as cool as I can.  I find a small performance gain with that.
