Can't Connect to the Internet :(

Hope this is the right place to post this in...

A few days ago...

firefox won't go into my e-mail, yahoo won't search, and I can't go to MANY sites like https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default...dge&folderID=27 (need to upgrade)... IE v7 WON'T even connect to the internet nor will opera... now I have no spyware (as far as I can tell).. add-aware, spybot and ewido

I went into safemode with networking and EVERYTHING worked... but safemode = ANNOYING since everything = 1000x bigger + the top half of the screen = black (monitor doesn't like safe mode either)

So, someone told me to uninstall the ethernet and the winsock files in

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\W insock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\W insock2

which I did... but I have no clue how to uninstall the ethernet.... I got rid of the winsock files... not the ethernet and well (I did unplug for a while and replug)... I can't connect to the internet with any browser or messenger or anything... this is seriously troubling... any bright ideas?

Give us some info on your system.

OS and all that good stuff.  Also, what kind of network do you have set up? Are you using DHCP or a static IP?  Connecting directly from modem to the system or through a router?

In the interim, you can try to release/renew your IP from your ISP.

Start --> Run --> type 'cmd' --> hit enter.

In the command prompt that comes up, type 'ipconfig' and take a look there to see of you're currently holding an IP address.  If so, at the command prompt type 'ipconfig /release' and then 'ipconfig /renew'.  If you're running under DHCP, most of the time it will automatically re-establish a connection - but not always.

As far as the winsock is concerned, here is a good site explaining how to repair corrupted winsock settings.

Another thing, just to be sure, I'd use a known good cat5 cable.

Let us know more info and what happens and we'll take it from there.

I just uninstalled the ethernet, and then it detected it and reinstalled it.. I noticed that winsock2 appeared again... but still no connection whatsoever...

I have winxp amd runnin a switch which is like a router but with no encryption... that's how I'm writing this from my old computer... I reinstalled the ethernet, unplugged everythin for a few minutes... nothing... but winsock2 appeared again... and I have a cable connection

not sure what a cat5 cable is >.<

Anywayz, so I typed in cmd and ipconfig... I got addresses for Autoconfiguration IP Address and Subnet Mask... but the Connection-specific DNS Suffix and the Default Gateway is blank...

So I have no clue what this means so I just did the 'ipconfig /release' and then 'ipconfig /renew' but I got an error saying \"An Error Occurred whyile renewing interface local area connection 3: an operation was attempted on something that is not a socket\"

My Computer = HP Pavilion Media Center TV m7330n Desktop PC http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product...n&lang=en&cc=ca

EDITING: I did a system restore... BUT the intial problem with IE/Opera not working are there, and Mozilla has limited access again...

You have a corrupt TCP stack.

Download the tool from HERE , run it and tell us how everything goes.

You may have to download it on your old system and then transfer it by flash drive or even floppy since you have no connectivity on your Pavilion.  Its a 1.37MB download.

I'm assuming that you've fixed the problem since you haven't gotten back with us.

If you have, let us know what the problem was.
