Press conference shelved following Warner Bros Blu-ray support announcement
The North American HD DVD Promotion Group has notified attendees atthis year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that the scheduledpress conference originally due to have taken place last night at8:30pm local time was called off following the announcement from WarnerBros that it would be siding with Blu-ray in the next-gen DVD face-off.
"Based on the timing of the Warner Home Video announcement today, wehave decided to postpone our CES 2008 press conference," the statementread.
"We are currently discussing the potential impact of thisannouncement with the other HD DVD partner companies and evaluatingnext steps. We believe the consumer continues to benefit from HD DVD'scommitment to quality and affordability – a bar that is critical forthe mainstream success of any format."
Speculation following the news, which GamesIndustry.biz originally reported last week, centres on whether or not the Warner Bros move signals a now-inevitableshift towards Blu-ray as the format of choice for next generation DVDs.
As salesof Sony's PlayStation 3 have picked up the format is building up a baseof potential users on top of standalone Blu-ray players, and while Xbox360 owners can purchase an HD DVD drive attachment, it's not thoughtthat a significant proportion has done so yet.
