A head teacher is taking children's computers and TVs from their bedrooms in an effort to improve behaviour.
Duncan Harper, of New Woodlands School, which deals with pupils excluded from other primary schools in Lewisham, south London, said standards had risen.
Parents gave permission for him to enter their houses after he told them pupils were arriving tired and irritable every morning.
Mr Harper said stopping computer and TV use at night made a "real difference".
One pupil, who had had his television confiscated, noticed an improvement in his own behaviour and, when it was returned, decided he no longer wanted it.
I actually agree; this ties in with our popular Computers and Schools thread, but I think he made a good but brave decision there; maybe games in very young childeren should be moderated a little. Below the age of 11, children should be taught to apply themselves and not be relient on computer games. I've never had a TV in my room, (and hardly watch it anyway ) but I have had a computer since secondary school age.
We'll I've been with computers pretty much since I was born, but have not developed a dependence on them. I prefer to use computers for internet browsing, games and messaging - mainly for entertainment. I think that one should never develop a complete dependence on computers and technoloy. From past experience, people who have developed too much of a dependence will not know what to do if the technology is not there (or goes bust. Which it always does - almost by definition . (this 'laughing' emoticon really looks like it is having facial spasms. My sorrow goes out to all the people who actually laugh in this unfortunate manner).
I've never had a TV in my room - and I don't watch it much (there is so much crap on TV nowadays). If I do watch television, it will be to see a documentary (which does stimulate some brain activity) or a movie (which requires next to no brain activity. Or next to no brain). Being a vegetable in front of a television is not my idea of real entertainment - I would much rather vegetate in a French lesson.

I don't have a television in my room either, but 3 computers...
I used to play like 8 hours per day, now I play maybe 4.
Woah! 8 hours a day, what a geek! Hahahaha I used to be the same (well, not quite 8 hours a day, that's pretty extreme....you probably don't want to go around telling people that). Then I discovered that there is actually a real world outside (and I'm not talking about WOW for those of you MMORPG fanatics).

I can play 20 hours in a piece, but changing games of course, right now I'm on a lan party, we only pause for sleeping
Well first off as most members know here I dont have a TV however my family used to have one, however I have never had either a TV or Computer in my room.
This is what I have in my room:
A King Size Bed
A BIG Desk
A Chair
A DAB Radio
and a few books.
I love listening to the radio and this has stayed with me my whole life, when I was a little kids I used to listen to story tapes to get me to sleep now I listen to BBC 7 www.bbc.co.uk/bbc7 or radio five live for current news this seems to get me to sleep.
I also really like to read it bed and normally I can read a five hundred page book in a night. - im sleepy the next day

I have 3 computers and a broken computer Never had a TV, and I don't want one!
8 Hours is alot Andurion! But I would probably do alot without noticing time going by, the Computer is the Theif of time! I'm not sure about 500 Pages, but I did read 1984 in 3 nights
MMORPGs? I hate them Guild Wars, WOW, and all the rest are really for people who don't even know the outside world exists,.
Deaths involving WOW:

(Neglected child dies while parents play World of Warcraft.)
Quote:
A that a young girl, nicknamed Snowly, died after playing World of Warcraft for several days straight during a national holiday. An online funeral service was held to commemorate her passing a week after her death. .

It is interesting to note that during the past several months most, if not all, cases of videogame related death have occurred within Asia- China, South Korea and Japan, rather than Europe and North America. This highlights the difference in videogames culture between East and West.
I'd rather stick to RTS's or FPS's, They require strategy and have good communities (Im not saing MMORPGs don't , but the people who play them are diiferent to the people (Like James Coombs) who play MMORPGs
Yeh I heard of some man in Korea that spent a whole week in a lan cafe gaming. I think he was 45 - 50 years old. Anyway, he died of a heart attack in the poorly-ventilated, dark (and probably very noisy) lan cafe. He should have levelled-up faster, or at least bought an Ankh of Reincarnation.
I remember the last time I spend reading books - I read 6 in 9 days. I didn't read continuously - although I have done this before at Christmas, because in Scotland there is nothing else much to do - my grandad has only just bought a PC. The total pages read in 9 days was: 3,340. That's a bit sick, I think - I won't be doing that any time soon... What kind of books do you guys like to read? I prefer science fiction, used to like fantasy, and occasionally read some non-fiction. Now it's nearly the holidays, I think I'm going to go back to living like a bum. Here is what I have in my room atm:
1. A bed (not Kind size - single)
2. Two large desks - one for junk, the other for a computer/speakers/subwoofer/printer, a light and even more junk
3. 6 bookshelves which are overstuffed with books and junk (and old, completely useless schoolbooks that have been kept by my mum for sentimental - or just mental - reasons)
4. Enough food and water to start my own supermarket chain
I too prefer RTS and FPS to MMORPGs. They require a tiny bit more brain activity - and there is much less lag. I reckon the deaths are occuring in Asia more because people here have easy access to lan cafes (like Korea for example), which do not charge much (in Singapore, where I don't think there are any deaths - the culture is very different to Korea - it is 1 Pound per hour on a very good gaming machine). Also, there are far more people in Asia than in Europe and America (China's population, by itself, is 50% more than the US and Europe combined, and Japan's population is 2/3 of Europe or the US's populations).

I read the 4th part of harry potter in 2 days,LotR in 3. And I don't play 8 hours anymore...
My room:
A bed (very important) A small Storage box A Display Cupboard 2 desktops A large Stack for clothes made of Cherry lumber A really large Bookshelf (is that the name?) Two Storage pieces, look like desktops just there is no space under the top plate. Furthermore two chairs A large Fan hanging above me like a damokles sword
Oh yeah, haha - I have two chairs as well. One is for me and the other is for me to dump my clothes on when I'm done with them. I think that I am transforming into a slob. Perhaps I may do what 800fsbang said:
"Im all for computers and consoles but there are other things that kids need, mainly excersise lol"
I may consider doing some exercise this summer......I've actually managed to put on 2.5 kg in under a week from eating too much.
I do some Rock Climbing, Waking (Hiking), Outdoor Persuits, and I have 3 computers in my room, usually 2 monitors, on Lacia Blueeye, a G4 with 4GB ram, a high power gaming pc and another PC, 2 desks, a massive filing/server cabinet, 2 sets of draws 3 bookshelves full of books, non-fiction, science fiction, 1984, brave new world, coming up for air, George Orwell, HG Wells, animal farm is my kind of book
Not much to do in scotland? Think whats outside in therms of Outdoor activities literally on your doorstep and then the unique wildlife
I definatly prefer RTS, I like SimCity 4 Rushhour, Age of Empires, Battlefield, Rome Total War games, Civilisation, Commander and Conquer, the Classic Maxis Sim gamesm I have all of them... the only game I like on DS is Advance Wars (a Turn based Strategy) and for some reason Mario Kart but im bored of the DS now
