Newly founded Serious Games Source is carrying a feature from Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars director David Rejeski who argues that the time has come for gaming's version of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the US overseer of its Public Broadcasting Service.
Rejeski draws strong parallels with then-President Lyndon Johnson's remarks upon founding the CPB in 1967, who said "we have only begun to grasp the great promise of the medium" and saw current non-commercial television reaching "a fraction of its potential audience – and a fraction of its potential worth." Serious games, he argues, in their current form, "like serious TV, are likely to remain a sidebar in the history of mass media" -- but a government funded institution could be instrumental in legitimizing efforts to apply games "to serious challenges such as education, training, medical treatment, or better government."
