Debian was first announced on 16 August1993 by Ian Murdock, then a student at Purdue University. Murdock initially called his system the "Debian Linux Release".
Debian Etch is what iVirtua Community (UK) runs on, too!
The latest stable release of Debian is4.0. The last update to this release was made onAugust 15th, 2007. Read more about availableversions of Debian. If you'd like to start using Debian, you can easilyobtain a copy, and then follow theinstallation instructionsto install it. We know that the Debian version names come from the Toy Story characters, and the swirl probably came from Buzz Lightyear.
Last month, Debian developer Christian Perrier reported about the movie Toy Story 2, and that he detected the swirl on Buzz Lightyears chin: Indeed. It appears in the original Toy Story already, and both are great movies, and as we all know, the names of all versions of Debian are taken out of these movies from Pixar. And Buzz Lightyear is a really cool character - you can see that when in Toy Story 2 there are 2 Buzz’s around.
Personally, I like the naming system, some people, like on Debian user forums ( Can't stand the toy story names ) have no sense of humor...
