We’re getting reports that the names, addresses, email addresses, credit card numbers and expiry dates, Paypal email addresses, associated eBay user ID and other information about more than 1,200 eBay users was posted to eBay’s Trust and Safety forum on Tuesday. The information, most of which appears to be valid, was still being posted when eBay shut down the forum about an hour and a half later. This eBay forum, which now spans 27 pages, shows the panicked reactions of eBay users when informed of the leak by other members.

Where the information came from remains to be seen. eBay says in a blog posting dated Tuesdaythat the data may not be new, but most likely comes from “previous account takeovers”. They’re denying allegations of a “hack”, and claim that the credit card information does not correspond to the information that either Paypal or eBay has stored for those users.

eBay didn’t comment on whether the malicious user was “Vladuz”, a member who claimed to have hacked eBay last December, and who successfully posted to the forums in February and March using a special account type reserved for eBay employees - eBay admitted at that time that some customer service accounts had been compromised, but not user data, says AuctionBytes.

eBay is contacting all affected users by phone so that they can take preventative measures, should it emerge that the credit card information is valid.

A short statement was made by one of the support staff who said:
Quote:

eBay is currently working with liveworld to remove the posts and get this fixed.
Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Kind Regards,
~Kristal
eBay Customer Support

This was met with angry responses from the eBay community:

Quote:

The least you could do is PRETEND you are taking this seriously!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What you could do:

1. Get in touch with eBay support
2. Delete your eBay account
3. Delete your credit/debit cards from eBay
4. Get one card for shopping online and only fill it with money when you want to use buy something online
5. Don't WHATEVER you do link your eBay, PayPal account up to your credit card!

We can't be sure yet mate, no real word from eBay as-of-yet, if you have any doubts I reccomend that you email ebay customer support and ask in the ebay support forums as well.

Apart from "Jessica's" bad English (if Jessica is her real name) she does explain how they got the information, but remember their is no official response from eBay as of yet and we'd still recommend contacting eBay.

We'll update this post as more information becomes available.
