The late Lady Bird Johnson may have hated billboards, but even she would have applauded the FBI's announced partnership with Clear Channel to fill the nation's digital billboards with mugshots of the nation's most wanted criminals. It's just one small step towards a sci-fi future where purse snatchers, thought criminals and terrorists alike will be snagged by the citizenry after the authorities plaster their pics on public transit plasma screens and emergency blue-tooth the photos as pop-ups on our iPhones and iZhones.
The new system is being rolled out to 20 U.S. cities after a trial in Philadelphia. The idea originated after a citizen FBI agent (who went to FBI Citizen Academy) who works for Clear Channel suggested it to a real FBI agent. The FBI credits the billboards for helping them snag two fugitives in October in Philly.
The lucky cities are Akron, Albuquerque, Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland, Columbus, Des Moines, El Paso, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Memphis, Miami, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Newark, Orlando, Philadelphia, Tampa, and Wichita.
I'd prefer it if the billboards also showed some America's Most Wanted-like re-enactment of the alleged crimes of the wanted, but then again, one can't get too much future at once.
