I found this at my local shop in the UK, WOW you after Dual Core are you sure? AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core 3800 512k Cache per core (2.0GHz) Skt 939 Retail inc.fan (3 yr.warr.) ? 241.70 = about 419.806 USD thats a lot of money, you will have no were to put it, you just spent all your money of the CPU? :(
dang I didn't know they were that much. I guess I'll compromise and upgrade as I continue life like with the other parts. What should I get in the meantime.
- Case - Depends on what you like. - Power Supply - Probably around 500 watts Overkill if you're not going for SLI - Motherboard - EPoX 9NPA+ Ultra - Processor - AMD Dual Core something You really need dual core? I'd go with a AMD 64 3000+ Venice and overclock it a bit. - Heatsink/Fan for CPU - Stock is fine. - Thermal Compound - Don't need it unless you're having heat problems from bad contact. - Memory - 512mb Buy from a brandname, cheap memory can be bad memory. I'd recommend Kingston, Crucial, OCZ or Corsair. - Video Card - 6800GS if you can, 6600GT otherwise. - Sound Card - Something cheap. Save the money since you're on a budget, onboard aint bad at all these days. - Hard Disk Drive(s) - cheapest 7200rpm I can find - CD/DVD Drive(s) - - Floppy Drive - Doesn't matter, its all about the same, one with a media reader may be nice though. - Keyboard & Mouse - Logitech mouse would be my choice, find a keyboard you like. - Monitor - Dell or Veiwsonic for LCD, dunno for CRT. - Speakers - Klipsch, Logitech, Creative Labs.

About $20. - Monitor - Dell LCD - Speakers - Probably Logitech

Might be a good idea to wait for a little while untill you get some more money. $500 isn't much for a gaming machine. Also, prices go down quickly, especially with a lot of new stuff coming out now, so you can probally get a much better deal in a couple monthes anyways.
If you go for this Board you can run all these on it, AMD? Athlon 64 X2 / Athlon 64 FX / Athlon 64 / Sempron Socket 939. so when you want to upgrade to that big CPU you have the board that can run it
Is the 6600gt the one you can unlock the 4 extra pipelines with? I'm getting a gift certificate to Circuit City and I can buy a case with it.
- Case - - Power Supply - In case? - Motherboard - EPoX 9NPA+ Ultra (Does this work with all processors for when I want to upgrade?) - Processor - AMD 64 3000+ Venice (Do I need to pay extra for a 64-bit version of windows?) - Memory - Kingston ValueRAM 1GB (2 x 512MB) - Video Card - XFX GeForce 6600GT 128MB - Sound Card - Integrated - Hard Disk Drive(s) - cheapest 7200rpm I can find - CD/DVD Drive(s) - - Floppy Drive - One with a media reader - Keyboard & Mouse - The circuit city near me has some good cheap wireless keyboard/mouse combos. The 6600GT is not the unlockable card, for that you'd want the 6800.
I would recommend against the power supply that comes with tje case. A bad power supply is one of the most underrated problems. From what I've seen and read Antec (KoolDrew may say otherwisee :P), OCZ and Fortron are good choices.
All socket 939 mobos work with Athlon 64, Athlon FX and Athlon X2 processors.
You don't need 64-bit Windows and it can in fact cause problems with apps that use 16-bit installers.

I wouldn't even bother with an A64 since the S939 Opterons are out now. The Opterons overclock better and have more cache etc. You can buy an Opteron 146 for under $200 and basically have an FX-57 when overclocked (YMMV). When it comes to dual-cores the Opterons are even more of a bargain.

I never said Antec didn't make good PSU's. It is just the Neopower and TPII's have ventilation problems, thus are not recommended. The new NeoHE actually looks very promising. I am pretty convinced the OEM of them is even Seasonic. SilentPCReview has a review of the 430w up. They have definitely moved up to the front of the modular list for me, and for the first time I may have to consider an Antec equal to Fortron in build quality.
Glen, get a single 1GB stick so you can upgrade to 2GB without using all of your slots.
I have to go to the dentist now, so I can't comment on other things in this topic...
Big difference. First of all AMD isn't going to develop anything new for socket 940 anymore and it requires registered memory which is slower then the normal stuff. Plus 940 processors (other then Opterons) are pretty scarce these days.
