AntiVir - It has a great detection rate and is really light on recourses. However it does not update automatically.
avast! - Is a little heavier on recourses then AntiVir, but still a good product and has a good detection rate.
AVG - Another very popular free solution that is light on recourses.
Software Firewall:
Kerio v215 - This version of Kerio is very easy to use and configure. It is also really light on system resources. Kerio v4 is also available for free, but v215 is a much better product IMO.
Outpost Free - Another very good product, but I prefer the simplicity of Kerio.
ZoneAlarm - ZoneAlarm offers shareware and freeware firewalls, for basic desktop protection.
Spyware Removal & Prevention:
Windows Defender - Many reviewers has rated it the best of its kind and I tend to agree. It has the best detection rate and offers good real-time p[rotection. Should be used along with other spyware removers.
Ad-Aware SE Personal - Another very good product. It should be used for occasional scanning. I suggest using Microsoft AntiSpyware for real-time protection.
SpywareBlaster - Prevents the installation of spyware and other potentially harmful software!
Utilities
USB Apps - A pack of all sorts of USB programs all put together with an autolaunch feature. Fits on 128MB+ drives. It includes FTP, Firefox, editors, and Open office.
DriveImage XML - One of the best (and free) drive imaging, restoring and copying applications I (Greg) have used.
Internet
Browsers
Opera - One of the fastest and most full-featured browser available; includes RSS feed reader, BitTorrent client, etc.
Firefox - Internet Explorer's #1 competition; more than 50 million downloads worldwide; simple, easy, yet effective
Mozilla Suite - More advanced version of Firefox; contains many useful tools for web development; fastest rendering engine than Firefox
It is recommended to use one of the above browsers rather then IE for security reasons.
Multimedia
Audio/Video Players
Winamp - a nice audio/video media player with good features
iTunes - one of the best audio/video players; Apple's official software for syncronization with the iPod; includes podcasts
Anybody know of some decent movie editing (not windows movie maker) and window capture software?
Here ya go, please check them out and tell me which one you think is best, I'll then add it to the list...

Firefox Beta 2 looks really cool, also IE7 is now in Release Candidate 1 (RC1), and I think also the RC1 of Vista is out, also there is the CTP's of Microsofts Expression Web Designer, Graphic Designer and Interactive Designer! They all target Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Release Candidate 1 (RC1).
If you want to try Expression Interactive Designer but wish to continue to use Windows Vista™ Beta 2 or WinFX Beta 2, please install our May 2006 CTP, using the installation instructions specific to that CTP. The September CTP is compatible with the RC1 release of Windows Vista.
The CTP releases are a great way to experiment and begin familiarizing yourself with the tool, but we do not recommend using them for production work at this time.
Some more here... Xen is a freeware Virtual PC program, and Nvu is a freeware web editor comparable to Microsoft Frontpage.
Also, there's Lavalys Everest Home 2.20. This application is no longer updated or supported by Lavalys, but it's last stable version (2.20) is still available for download. It's gives you all kinds of information about a system.
On a similar note, there's SiSoftware Sandra Lite 2005 SR3, a program not quite as informative (in my opinion) as Everest, but it has a good deal more punch in benchmarking... especially if you have a Pentium 4!
Finally, and I believe someone mentioned it, there is CCleaner (Crap Cleaner), a darned good program for Windows XP. I can personally attest to this program repairing one of my computers in one fell swoop. It's amazing, scheduleable, fast and free. Windows XP machines armed with a good firewall, antivirus, antispyware, browser and this are the machines that Mac users are afraid of -- because they run perfectly and put OS X to shame.
Unlocker is the solution to the following types of Windows error messages
* Cannot delete folder: It is being used by another person or program * Cannot delete file: Access is denied * There has been a sharing violation. * The source or destination file may be in use. * The file is in use by another program or user. * Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.
The best site that brings all free software together is without a doubt www.filehippo.com with its regular updates and fast, clean interface!
