America’s love affair with camping out in front of game retailers in the run up to console launches has moved into a new era with the launch of Console Camp, a web site ‘dedicated to the sport of camping… for consoles’ on which you can ‘submit photos, send updates on the number of people in line, and automatically make Google maps of your camping site’.
Since going live, the site has been mostly focused on the PS3 launch, but is now looking towards Wii, released in the US on November 19. Sony’s D-day went off with minor hitches, and to date we’ve seen only a handful of stories concerning retailers closing due to unruly crowd behaviour. Which is not to say that all PS3 campers were happy ones (some were just confused), as this murky video from Destructoid illustrates.
The mood was better at Sony’s pre-launch party in New York, which saw COO Howard Stringer and SCEA president Kaz Hirai join hip-hop artist Ludacris on stage to thank PlayStation customers for their support for the brand.
If you aren’t caught up in the PS3/Wii sales hype, chances are your attention is focused on Gears Of War, which launches today in the UK. Microsoft expects the game to become the fastest-selling Xbox game to date, reaching 1m sales before the end of 2006. Edge’s review of the game appears in issue 170, on sale November 23. In the meantime, though, here’s a question: if Gears Of War played exactly as it does but looked like a mediocre PS2 title, how would it affect your perception of the game? Yes, it’s a question about the importance of graphics, but it's especially relevant as the next generation of gaming steps up a gear this week. Share your thoughts below.
=o here's my recommenation on how to purchase a PS3, wait until next summer until the gaming system reaches a decent price; $600 is outlandish for a videogaming system in my opinion; I mean, its pc like capabilities are nice and all, but I already have a pc to do that type of business..
