Internet 2...the gateway to the new generation of internet technology. Information on the technology itself i do not have as it is highly restricted to the 5 universities working on it...

but internet 2 will be released in around 5 years(no release date has been set) which is set to revolutionise the internet as we know it...

it will replace the very old system we are currently running for a much better safer service...

households shouldn't have to change hardware and such only the ISP need to update their servers...

internet 2 should be faster, safer and more reliable..

it is said it will use XHTML(a strict form of HTML) but webmasters are being advised to update their sites to XHTML so it will work on internet 2 on its release...

don't it sound great

Eventually the internet will become more global (in a sense) - it is currently controlled entirely in the USA. There are some Europeans developing another internet - in Germany, I think. China has already introduced its own domains (which are written in Chinese characters, and are currently unavailable to outsiders). I can't really see where the Internet will be heading in the future - I don't know enough about how its development, both within and without the US, is progressing.

No, not the same thing.
DSL 2 is simply a faster version of DSL.

Internet2 and Level 3 Communications, Inc. will develop and deploy a new nationwide network and new services to enhance and support the advanced needs of the academic and research community. This new network initially will offer Internet2 members 100 gigabits per second (Gbps) of capacity, more than 10 times that of the current Internet2 backbone network, and will be designed to easily scale to add capacity as Internet2 members’ requirements evolve over time. Based on input and feedback from the research and education community, including experience gained with the Hybrid Optical and Packet Infrastructure (HOPI) project, the network will be designed to support a full range of production IP services as well as new on-demand, dedicated optical wavelength services to support the most demanding network applications and experimentation.

DSL 2 is just an advance in speed, and "Internet 2" is america's two teir internet; offering faster speeds more reliably. Goverment and public service internet already operates as the backbone in the USA, and there are some smaller scale ones in the UK (WANs).

Notwithstanding its benefits, in recent months ISPs have begun to chip away at the principle, shifting toward a two-tiered internet that would enable them to prioritise their own network traffic over that of their competitors.

The two-tiered approach is taking shape in various forms in different parts of the world.

North American ISPs have also begun to use their network position to unfairly disadvantage internet telephony competition. For example, Canadian cable provider Shaw now offers a premium Voip service that promises to prioritise internet telephony traffic for a monthly fee.

This approach, which has occurred in countries such as Panama, Oman, United Arab Emirates, and Mexico, reduces competitive choices for telecommunications services and cuts off consumers from one of the fastest growing segments of the internet.

In Europe, some ISPs have similarly begun to block access to internet telephony services. For example, this summer reports from Germany indicated that Vodafone had begun to block Voice over IP (Voip) traffic, treating the popular Skype program as "inappropriate content."

You can get 100Mb/s in Japan, so I guess it will be Fiver Optic and not Ethernet in the house

The Uk is really expensive, Unlimited (Truly Unlimited) 8MB/s Broadband can gost you towards £40-£50 p/m, yes you can get some package for £24.99 that will give you maybe 2-8m/bs, but crap ratios, 5GB Usage or something, and bad download speeds, but thats the UK.

A dedicated server can set you back well in to the £1000's in the UK, and even with Shared Hosting... Just an Example;

1and1.co.uk
The "Professional" package, and  you get:

Linux Hosting
10 free .co.uk domains
10 GB web space
3,000 1 GB POP3/IMAP accounts
80 GB monthly traffic

£19.99 p/m ($36.48 p/m)

1and1.com
The 'Developer Pro" package which is equivalent:

Linux Hosting
5 domain names
150 GB web space
3,000 e-mail accounts
1,500 GB traffic

$19.99 (£10.95 p/m)

Look at the difference in spec... and price, your getting 140GB more webspace, and loads more traffic! The Accounts below that on the US 1and1.com are still better spec than the UK 1and1.co.uk and cheaper!

3 domain names
100 GB web space
2,000 e-mail accounts
1,000 GB traffic

For $9.99 p/m! Still better spec and way, way cheaper! (£5.48! p/m)

I think I'll get hosting from America, but then again, we gat arounf half and half users from US and UK, so we'd have to choose carefully.
