Does anyone know how I can trace the IP address of a contact on MSN whilst in Messenger, or with an email?

If they are causing you trouble just block them.

If you are ok using Command prompt, To find out a persons IP when you are chatting with them on MSN Messenger you must be currently chatting or transfering a file the goto the command prompt and type netstat. The look for port 1863.

This is a general method. MSN Messenger can also use port 80

If you find their IP, you can do a simple traceroute and find the country of origin and alot of other details with the Arin Whois, www.arin.net/whois/

Yeah that's right. I don't want to hack though lol, I suspect someone on my msn is impersonating someone else, and i wish to see their location.

Anyone can use a proxy server, and you need alot of expertise to hack just an IP, most users IP's are not static (unless youask your ISP for a static one).
It is very easy to find out anyones IP.

If you find out someones IP, run a traceroute, by putting the IP after the "=" on this URL.

Email is (generally) quite simple too, though depends on your provider. For gmail you open up an email from the person and (in the top bar thingy, next to the date) click More Options. That should open up a new lil panel, then click: 'Show original.

In hotmail I think there's an option in preferances to make the 'Full Header's Visible'. Alternatively, you can run a 'Finger Trace' on the email address (try: www.samspade.com)... And that's the sound of me marching out of my lil spectrum of knowledge...

I found this article really helpful when trying to do a similar thing once (found out the person was living about 20000 miles away from where the person I knew lived

Thats a traceroute youve done on the IP, and you've forund the IP in the Email Headers.
It is very easy, Flooble to use a proxy server, so that it hides your real IP address, you can use any open public proxy, (read above posts by me) to hide your IP, and also appear anywhere in the world.
I can change from China, to USA, to Argentena the Norway in a matter of seconds. Its great being behind the great fire wall of China, and seeing what sites are censored, as you are in a Proxy Server in China. (iVirtua isnt Filtered )

You can Learn how to Read Email Headers here:
http://www.stopspam.org/email/headers.html
Look at the List of Common Headers

Its also easy to make an email look like its from anyone, but it can be dangerous. It is very easy to trace an email to its original source. I am stating this for reference only. Dont go emailing people from tax@inlandrevenue.com or billgates@microsoft.com ok?

Open a command prompt by clicking Start, Run, and type cmd in the box and press OK. You should get a black "Command Prompt" screen where you can type things. This can be done with ther Terminal.app in Macintosh OS X and the command line in most Unix and Linux based operating systems.

Find out the name of your ISP's mail server, normally mail.isp.com or smtp.isp.com. This should be in your email client settings. Then type 'telnet mail.isp.com 25'. (25 is the port SMTP [simple mail transfer protocol] uses.)

When the mail server responds, you can start typing SMTP commands.
Start with 'helo blahblah.isp.com'. (You may have to use your ISP's domain name for it to be accepted.)

If it says 'pleased to meet you' or something like that, continue with the address you want the mail to come FROM. So to forge mail from Bill Gates, type 'MAIL FROM: billgates@microsoft.com'

If it says 'Sender Ok', type who you want the mail to go to, i.e. your friends address. Type 'RCPT TO: yourfriend@isp.com'

If it says 'Recipient ok', then you can type the message. Type 'DATA' and press enter. On the first line type 'Subject: yoursubject' and press enter twice. That'll be the subject.

Continue typing your message, such as 'I'm bill gates and want to send you a billion dollars'. When you are done, put a single period (.) on a line by itself. The server should say 'Message accepted for delivery'.

You are done. You have just forged an email, and the recipient should be receiving it shortly.

You can get software to do this; it's often used by spammers; and contains spyware.

IP Trackers can be useful.....

Although you can stop them just by using Proxy Servers.
