New York state senator has announced his plan to introduce legislation that will ban the use of electronic devices such as iPods, BlackBerrys and cell phones while crossing streets in major cities.

State Sen. Carl Krueger, who represents New York's 27th district in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, claimed that the phenomenon of "iPod oblivion" has led to a number of fatal accidents on urban streets. While he did not cite any statistical studies that have indicated a rise in such incidents, he referred to the January death of a 23-year-old Brooklyn man who, tuned into his iPod headphones, walked into the path of a city bus.
Not only will music fans likely complain about an iPod ban, but in New York City, Wall Street's notorious BlackBerry addicts may be loathe to put away their business tools when walking about the streets. But Krueger stands fully behind his new bill. "Tuning in and tuning out can be a fatal combination on the streets of New York," he said.

what if you're deaf?

then you wouldn't be distracted by the noise from an ipod. Although why you'd be using one is a good question....

I hope this legislation stays out of NSW.

Thats why the rule is stop, LOOK and listen. But that would mean deaf people cant cross the street in cities since they cant hear on coming traffic either.

This is a very good idea. It will stop a lot of accidents if people follow it. When I cross a road, I will always check both sides, and if I have my MP3 player on me, I always have one earphone out when walking or riding.

Well, when you loose one sense, your other senses become stronger. You are probably more safe if you are death actully..

I think if you had half a brain cell you'd notice a city bus even if you were listening to music.
This is load of rubbish.
How are they going to ban people listening to mp3 players while crossing the street? have a policemen stood along both sides of the path at ten metre intervals? or just say "Dont cross the street listening to music or you'll be in alot of trouble" and hope it catches on?

I think it's even more ridiculous that people have been stupid enough to cross the street with loud music blaring in their ears.

If you're stupid enough to not actually see a bus before it hits you, you really deserve to get run over.

Also, banning electronic devices will do nothing - it is just not an enforceable law.

Well you're right, but I've been a habitual listener of music (Mp3, CD Player), sometimes both but then again sometimes with only one.  As said you're eyes and staying aware of the area, i.e. looking around, should substitute for the lack of hearing.

Unless I'm just sitting somewhere, I never have more than one earbud in.
Come on... How about we have a bit more "survival of the fittest"?
