It seems that Maxtor is the performance leader with the HD's only because they offer a 16MB buffer cache, 350GB space with SATA2. They come extremely close to Western Digital's Super Fast 10,000RPM Raptor drive.

If Western Digital was to come out with a Raptor Drive @ 200GB - 16MB cache - SATA2 - 10,000RPM, then they would sell out the first day they would be announced. And keep the performance Crown.

Just for INFO > The link is a little old, but interesting.

Right Now, Maxtor's SATA2.

Western Digital makes excellent hard drives. Seagate's Barracudas are quiet, but not as fast as Western Digital. WDC combines both speed & silence. Hitachi is also another excellent company.
Most Maxtors I've seen have burn-out problems, (similar to 36GB Raptors, except Raptors are @ 10K RPM, while Maxtor is @ 7.2K RPM) and they are quite loud.

How come every time theres a poll theres never the choice i want on it?

Anyway my vote goes to samsung, they never get the best reviews nor are they the best performers around but every single one ive had has worked without a hitch untill i finaly got shut of it. This means more to me than any crummy magazine review or performance comparison.

David.

I thought Dell, HP (Compaq) & gateway use WD, Seagate or Maxtor?

No wonder Dell systems are slow.

Maxtor ships all their drives set for highest performance, you can change it, you have a choice of 3 levels

Agreed. Even Maxtor's 16MB cache as well as SATA2 interface cannot withstand the brute force of Raptors.

Raptors are fast, but there isn't SATA2 drives available until Q4 of 2005. So we will have to wait for the new SATA2 drives to compete.

But the cool thing is when Western Digital comes out with there new Raptors w/SATA300, 10,000RPM, 16MB buffer cache
