Richard Sim, the Senior PM of Windows Live Mail, announced yesterday on his blog that they have decided to keep the Hotmail name so as to lessen the confusion of the 260+ million users. Here's the link to his blog: http://mailcall.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!CC9301187A51FE33!29123.entry
All the comments seem to favor Windows Live Mail over Windows Live Hotmail.
1) Live Mail is easy to remember and can compete with GMail. They are both two syllables.
2) Instead of "www.hotmail.com" you can use "www.livemail.com" or simply "mail.live.com". (I prefer the latter.)
3) For users, typing "username@live.com" is much easier than "username@hotmail.com". Why? Just feel how smooth your finger roll across your keyboard.
4) Converting @msn and @hotmail users to @live is a matter of domain forwarding. MS can simply setup domain forwarding to process all request to @hotmail.com and @msn.com to @live.com. Remember, people is about familiarity. The more you come in contact with the new interface and the new name, the easier it is to become accustomed to the new URL.
5) Promote Live Mail by putting headers on the Live Mail login page. Something like Hotmail and MSN Mail is now Live Mail. Leave that there for like 3-4 months and people will adapt.
I think microsoft just needs to be prepared to push on and advane quicly, in an industry that is moving especially fast, and contributors catching up or even apearing, in months, not years.
my fingers got so adapted to millzz@gmail.com that i can type that fast as hellll...so basically with anybody out there who is a DECENT typer...whatever email address they use, they will grow accustom to typing it out perfectly...regardless if it is one syllable or 10 syllables....
I would support the change to windows live mail. i type in hotmail.com to access my email, and because i'm in the live mail beta, i'm already used to the new interface. might as well keep it...
Do you think Windows Live Mail is as easy and memorable as Hotmail? They must have thought about that; and I think it is really I'm all for the change!
