I've built a new rig recently, and I'm having one bad experience with it.. I've installed WinXP Home on it, and its booting quite slowly. After the POST, there is a ~15sec gap before the motherboard decides to boot Windows. I have removed all drives from the boot sequence except for the HDD, and I've enabled \"Quick POST\".

Specs
Athlon64 3000
512MB RAM
120GB Samsung Spinpoint HDD (IDE, 7200 RPM)
LITE-ON CD-RW
ATi Radeon x600PRO 256MB

Any suggestions to why I'm receiving this annoying wait are highly appreciated.

Thanks

Analyze your boot time using BootVis.

I don't mean to be rude, but can you tell me what this will achieve before I download and install it?

What MB are you using specifically?

Apparently, the ASUS A7N8X line of boards tend to look for any SATA devices before timing the sequence out.

I'm more inclined to think that the OS install is bad after reading a bit about your problem.  If you've detached everything USB and disabled your NIC card and tried with the same results, the next step appears to be a fresh install.  Since it's a new install anyway, it won't hurt and it might fix your problem.  Any number of obscure Microsoft system files installing incorrectly may cause it.

Who knows why Windows doesn't perform to expectations sometimes.  It just...happens.

Alternatively, at least you're not alone:

The motherboard I am using is an ECS kn1 Extreme. Do I really have to reformat?.. I have many files and programs downloaded and s**t which would be a pain in the butt to burn to CDs/DVDs. Are you sure about this?

You could partition your drive, and put the stuff you wanted saved in the partition that won't be deleted.

Did you try KoolDrew's suggestion?

I agree with Predator.

Try everything else first.  But if nothing else works...

By no means do you _have_ to reinstall.  We can keep working the problem until we fix it or it goes away.  This is probably preferable for you since you stated that you have many applications and downloaded goodies that you'd like to keep.  Let's exhaust the hardware side before moving on to any software issues.

Couple of more questions though:

On the very first boot after the install, did it do the 15s lag?

Make sure the battery on your board isn't dead. I know it doesn't sound likea grand plan, but I remember having a Cyrix MII back in the day that did something similar and it appeared to be the battery. Why? I don't know.

For good measure, I'd run memtest86 on that machine.  It might be directly related to RAM issues. Even if the RAM POSTS alright, you never know.  The only issue with memtest is that ideally you should let it run for around 24 hours so it can make as many passes as possible.

The first POST after the installation ran at the same speed as this, as far as I can remember. I recall thinking \"Why the f**k isn't it working?!?\". The battery can't be dead, because all of my BIOS settings would be lost if it was (which they are not). I'll try out memteset86. Thanks a lot for the help everyone.

It will display a nice graph that can help diagnose the problem.
