Skype has confirmed it is having software problems on its network, resulting in a lack of connectivity for millions of Skype users. Manyusers cannot currently authenticate to Skype, rendering all voice, chat, and voicemail services effectively offline.
Skype's problems are still causing problems across theglobe, but it would appear that the end is in sight. We're receiving reportsfrom users who are successfully logging on to Skype, but those are the luckyfew. Most of us cannot get on the service, but Skype saysthat things should return to normal throughout the course of the day. "We'reon the road to recovery. Skype is stabilizing, but this process may continuethroughout the day," they say.
Plenty of theories have been floated as to what caused theproblem, but Skype itself says that it was an algorithm error with their ownservice. So this has nothing to do with Windows or Microsoft, nothing to dowith a hack or compromise.
Karl over at DSLReports has compiled a list of the evil-doers who all had a chance to get blamed for Skype's problems. He writes:
This story is going to get bigger before it's over. I've already talkedto two journalists who seem hellbent on making a mountain out of thisoutage. The problem, though, is that Skype seems to be suggesting thatthe outage was caused by their own bug, not something more sensationallike an attack on the network. So, it may be too hard to spin into areal bleeder... we'll keep an eye out.

Skype has confirmed it is having software problems on itsnetwork, resulting in a lack of connectivity for millions of Skype users. Manyusers cannot currently authenticate to Skype, rendering all voice, chat, andvoicemail services effectively offline. Some users appear to be unaffected, having authenticated before the problems began last night.
At 2PM GMT (9AM ET, 6AM PT) Skype announcedthat its engineering team had discovered a software issue that isexpected tobe resolved "within 12 to 24 hours." The original entry, which hasbeen removed, read: "Due to peer-to-peer network issues there areproblemswith Skype login. This issue is being investigated. We will give newupdateswhen the issue has been resolved. We apologise for any inconvenience."
Skype has pulled its client downloads from the site until the problemis fixed.
Skypeophiles here at Ars tell us that some users are showingup on contact lists already, but they are nonetheless having problemsconnecting to them for voice or text chat. A chat message I sent to oneuser arrived after 30 minutes, and we could both "see each other" asbeing "online" on our contacts list, even though we weren't.
Skype's recommendation is that you leave your clientrunning, so that it can authenticate to the service once it returns to normal.
