I'd say Debian, SUSE or Gentoo.

Nothing wrong with investing in Windows XP Pro X64. I have it & I am dual booting with Win 32.

In games I get about 20 FPS more in Windows 64 than I do in Win 32  ;)

Debian.  I've never used Gentoo but I've never had a problem with Debian and compared to Fedora Core 3 it's a dream. :P

I'm pretty happy with Debian and have it configured pretty much how I like.  Don't really feel like fooling around with another distro. :P
