Hate to bump this thread, but I changed my choice on laptops.
I'll probably go with the Compaq Presario V5000Z now.
WinXP home (which I'll just format and put Pro on) Turion 64 ML-32 1.8ghz 15.4\" WXGA w/Brightview 128M Radeon Express 200M w/hypermemory (128 dedicated, up to another 128 shared for a total of 256M if needed) 256M DDR (just going to buy two 512M from Crucial for 1Gig) 60GB 4200 HDD. (Hate 4200, but oh well) CD-RW/DVD combo 54g 802.11b/g WLAN w/ 125HSM/SpeedBooster 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
End price: $808 after rebates. Plus whatever the gig of Crucial is.
Not too bad, a little bigger than the 2000Z, which I don't like, but it offered the much better 128M dedicated video memory (would like the X700 even more, but way too much). That was a plus because I suspect I'll be doing some gaming, or trying to at least. It's heavier than the 2000Z by over a pound, but oh well. I'd like the Turion with 1mb of L2 cache, but brought the price up too much.

I may be able to stretch it to $1000, but I'll need some for insurance on it since there will be sand everywhere and I'll basically be in a combat environment.
