Oh well.  I really don't want to keep up this tirade of bantering back and forth.  We all have valid points and I suppose only time will tell.

Besides, this used to be a thread for choosing a new laptop, not OS :)

Anyway, great insight on everyones part.  Personally, I'll be with XP for quite a long time because of the sheer hardware demand with Vista and most arguably, the price it will be when its released.

Yes, I know that totally goes against everything I've said - but I was never counting myself.  Ok - have a good one everyone.

my thought on the adoption of technology is they wont release what they don't think people will buy/use. But if we all got 64bit processors DX9 Graphics cards etc windows vista might have been out by now but the problem is that each time new technology comes out it takes longer because they are having to adapt it to older technology. But that's just being idealistic, realisticly get whatever you can get a better deal on.

Very good idea.  I've tried to recommend that to anyone who I've met wanting to possibly buy a dell computer.

That's a fantastic site above. A good rule of thumb is also to call to ord er, do not order online. Computers are cool, but they're cold, logic machines. A human being on the phone is capable of doing more than just tabulating your credit and seeing what you're eligible for. Call Dell, their guys are really good and helpful.

Yeah, I called HP on the phone to order my laptop.  The guy was really helpful and I actually got a Veterans discount because of my Military service.  I wouldn't have gotten that if I'd had ordered it online.

Can't really go wrong with talking to a real person on the phone...unless they're in India of course.

Well, aren't you supposed to get a new computer every 4-6 years? I say that you adopt technology, but not every technology that comes out.

You're not \"supposed\" to get a computer anytime. I upgrade every two years, three at the max. That's why I got a three year warranty/accident coverage policy on my laptop.

I upgrade when I have the money, which sometimes isn't for 4 or 5 years.

Sometimes I just have to make do with what I've got.

1, if 64 bit is available now and for a good price, why not get it now?
2, Ok, so upgrade to a 64 bit. >_>

And for the laptop question, even though I said the Compaq, both are about the same I think, so yeah either one is good.

It should! That's the business version of the Inspiron E1405, which has a 14.1\" widescreen. I really think 14.1\" screens are the sweet spot, they're not huge (like my 17\" which is out and about waiting to be delivered as I type and I'm really excited so I'm typing this in the parenthesis), and they're not too small like a 12\" or 13.3\" screen.

You have to get some specs, Super. What kind of processor? What's her maximum screen resolution? Does she have a glossy LCD? What operating system? How much memory? Hard drive? Eh? Specs, man, specs! :D

Because, in the case of the Core Duo versus the Turion 64 X2, the Core Duo got superior battery life and system performance, aspects which, to some people, would be more important in their laptop purchase than, say, having x64-extension support in their processor.

The Compaq and the Dell aren't the same. The Dell is much bigger (17\" vs. 14.1\"), but it's also a good deal faster. The Compaq is smaller, but it has integrated graphics and a slightly slower processor. Due to it's 12-cell battery, smaller screen, and less hungry GPU, I would imagine that it's got a good deal more battery life.

My HP has a 15.4\" WXGA screen with Brightview.

I love the size, not too big, not too small.
