I am new to the board, so I will start by saying hello. Anyways, I have been a computer-fanatic since I was around ten years old, and a extreme RTS and FPS fan aswell. My only problem is, I am tired of always using my current computer, which is a P3 1ghz, which is pretty obsolete for this time. I am planning on building a computer myself, as I have always been facsinated by it. Any tips on what Mobo, CPU, RAM, Video Card, ect. I should buy? Prices would be nice too, I live in Canada X_X. I am trying to just get a Entry-level Gamer PC, with upgrades in mind later. My budget [X_x] is around 500$. Help? Oh, and I forgot to tell you, I have no idea how to put this thing together, though I have been looking up guides on the Internet.

Welcome to CITF!

Do you need stuff like monitor, speakers, keyboard, mouse, optical drive etc.? I would probably recommend something along the lines of a Biostar TForce6100-754 and a Sempron 64 3000+. I am using the same board and it is a great overclocker and has onboard video. The onboard video is not that great, but a ton better then you have now most likely. Also, you could always just buy a new video card for it later.

I can compile a list for you with prices and links for the entire system, but please answer my other question first.

No, I do not need any of the peripherals right now, I am just trying to get a decent PC. Thank you for the kind welcome. I would prefer AMD, as my friends who have the CPU say it kicks butt, though they are quite expensive, especially the Athlon 64, which I am hoping to get, the 3000+ specifically. I would also like a decent mobo with PCI-E, though I do not mind AGP, but PCI-E would be more compatible for future video card updates. I am also planning on buying a 6XXX series Nvidia, nothing fancy, just something that can run games such as Battlefield 2, CS:S, ect.

For gaming AMD is definetely the better choice. The Sempron 3000+ I recommended earlier is an AMD processor and it is really cheap. They go for around $85 (USD) and they overclock really well. You should expect at least 2.2GHz, but many can get up to 2.6GHz+

I would recommend going with a Sempron rather then the A64 because you will save quite a bit of money. This saved money can be used towards other things that would make a much larger impact on gaming performance. A better video card is a perfect example.

Also, yes, PCI-E is the way to go now. The motherboard I suggested has PCI-E.

I will compile a list right now and post it.

Biostar TForce6100-939 - $74.99
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ - $156
Corsair Value Select 1GB(2x512MB) - $74.99
Western Digital SATA 80GB - $53.99
Compucase LX-6A19 - $40
Fortron AX450-PN - $49.99

Total - $449.96

The links are to US vendors, but IIRC they all do ship to Canada. I tried searching around for stores in Canada, but I couldn't find many with a good selection. Also, the prices I listed are USD. $500 CAD is equal to about $435 USD so I tried to stay under that amount. The prices also do not take into account shipping.

I did not include a video card as it did not fit into the budget. However, you can just save up some money and buy a new video card later since the motherboard I recommended has onboard video.

EDIT - The Cooler Master Centurion 5 is only about $10 more then the case I posted above and it is a really nice case.

Thank you kindly, I will take your suggestions into consideration. Maybe you should try this site www.tigerdirect.ca, Canadian Prices, with a pretty good selection. Also, I believe I've been on Zipzoomfly before, and they do not ship to Canada, unless that has been changed recently. I would also prefer if all the parts were from one E-Store, rather than 2. Thanks.

I am aware of TigerDirect. However, they do not have the greatest reputation. In Canada or in the US. You can see here:

Ah, are there any other Canadian or atleast American E-Stores that ship to Canada? I am willing to pay more for the PC, if I must.

Hiya Turkey!  Welcome to CITF  :)

Keep us posted on how the build goes ok?  I'm curious to see the finished rig as I'm looking into building myself (yet) another computer.

*looks at the list Drew wrote up*

Hey thanks Drew, I might just use that myself :)

Anyone know of a good online do-it-yourself build guide? This is my first time, so I don't want to screw up anything majorly (or minorly). Also, I am thinking of getting a Sempron rather than a Athlon, but possibly a faster one, like a 3100+, or maybe a 64bit 3400+.

I would refer to both of them while building.

Ignore the model numbers. Also, I know I said get a sempron earlier, but when I was putting the list together I changed my mind. You can afford to go socket 939 so its best to do so. Performance will be better and you have a much better chance of the A64 overclocking better too. The average is about 2.6GHz.

How much more are the Socket 939s than the 754s on average? Also, are there any other fairly good S939 Mobos other than the Biostar, preferabbly one that is good for OCing.

They're right about the same, maybe slightly higher, but it's definitely worth it to go with 939.
