Eagle-eyed players have noted that the latest version of Steam released this week, notable primarily for bringing the long-developed Friends feature out of beta, also quietly saw the rollout of another new feature: the Steam Media Player. While still not fully integrated into the Steam platform, a look inside the /bin directory reveals smp.exe, which can be used by drag and dropping files onto the icon, or by double clicking to add it to the Windows context menu.
Still currently nothing more than a simple full-screen Windows Media Player wrapper, its appearance seems likely to set the stage for the release of Zombie Movie, the comedy horror short announced for eventual release on the platform last October, and possibly a wider strategy of episodic content of a non-playable variety. Given Live Arcade's selection of a growing stock of video content, including a just-announced deal to offer a year's worth of exclusive Epic Records videos, it seems the high adoption rates of content delivery systems perfectly places them as gateways for more than just games.
