Picked up an HP DV5000Z notebook and I'm looking to buy aftermarket ram since HP marks up their ram steep. The only problem I'm runinng into is this notebook ram is confusing me.
If so, that's about the cheapest I can find 1G (at least a name brand). But I'm stuck wondering if the OEM will cause any problems? I'm not swift on notebook RAM, help?
Also, I'm only going to put 1G in there, better to use two 512 or one 1G? I won't be upgrading the ram anytime soon and the 512's would be able to run dual channel. Ideas?
On that memoryx site, it lists PC2700 as compatible ram for the dv5000z, but on crucial's website, it lists PC3200. Confused? Yep. So which is it? PC2700 or PC3200 or both?
Well, since I've called HP and I talked to some barely english speaking guy, he had no idea what information I wanted, I called Crucial and they told me that they can only guarantee that the PC3200 is compatible.
Mm, slightly disappointed with HP product support because I had to keep asking the guy \"I'm sorry, I didn't understand what you said\". I managed to make out something about \"if you will give me your serial number (and I already told him that I don't even have the notebook yet) then we can try to help you.\"
So I guess I'm to understand that this guy, who works for HP, has absolutely no idea what kind of RAM that my notebook uses. Lovely.
I'm going to guess that it uses both, but the PC3200 is probably backwards compatible, meaning I won't get the full effect of the DDR400, so I might as well just get the PC2700.
Either 3200 or 2700 should work. It may run slightly faster w/ the 3200, and it should stay cooler if it doesn't. Unless there is more than $5-10 between the two, get the faster stuff.
HP's part site lists no less than 7 different subtypes for the zv5000 series (HP model numbers DP299AV, DP299AVR, DP523AV, DP523AVR, DW369AV, PN306AV, and PN307AV), so that might be whats causing you some confusion. Which one yours is will be listed on a sticker on the bottom. Tell us that, and we can look it up with more precision.
Drew, don't have the laptop yet so I can't take a look at the memory. Won't be here for another week minimum. The best I can do at this point is throw this out: EE393AV. That's the product number they gave me for the notebook.
I purposely got it with only 256mb because of the massive price hike with anything more than that.
Where did you find that parts list? I've looked for it but have yet to come across it. Can you paste it?

Went ahead and ordered a gig of Crucial PC3200 200-pin DDR400.
Crucial guaranteed that they would work, I'll take their word for it.
Was just over $100, so not bad at all. Now to just get the laptop in and put it in. I guess I'll have to remove the keyboard to get both dimms in, which will probably void the warranty. Fun times.
