Well, I tried out opera 9 technical preview 2 today, and it is quite good.
There are various new improvements, including:
New look for 404 pages and such - It now features much cleaner looking error pages and about pages and such, compared to the older versions (IMO).
Widgets - Widgets are one of the most welcome improvements I'd say. It will enable the community to create extensions. The extensions so far are just basic ones, but with some more work and a little time some great things could be created.
BitTorrent - It now includes the bittorrent client we have been waiting for. Although it was in other versions, I think they were taken down or something. It is activated when you actually click on a .torrent file link from within the browser, and appears as a normal download in the transfers tab, but with more information about peers etc..
Cache - You can now see what is in the cache by just browsing to the menu, and it will give you an output like the one seen below.
Identification - It is now set to identify as opera by defualt, unlike in previous versions.
Adblock - The adblocking features are more closer to the firefox extension 'adblock' now, or at least so I have read. I have yet to try this. Wildcards like the ones in adblock can be added in an INI file anyways, but now noone can compain that it doesnt have adblock anymore :)
Window Preview - You can now see the contents of a window and what it is etc.. by hovering the mouse over the tab.
opera:config - Opera now features an opera:config page, to edit the configuration on a more web-based interface.
Looks pretty good. But, I can't stand losing my extensions in FireFox.
What extensions? I'm sure they are available in opera as a different form too.
Does it cover these? Tweak network Fasterfox Cacheout! + IE view + Adblock Minimize to Tray + Restart Firefox SessionSaver + Tinyurl Creator
The ones with a + are the ones that I really like, and don't want to lose. Does Opera have something like those?
Tweak Network - Opera has lots of options, and now has an about:config page like the one in firefox (opera:config), so I would assume so. FasterFox - opera:config & preferences Cacheout - Not that I know of, although I am sure you could create a button to do it. IE View - Opera has native support for this. You can create buttons and such to do almost ANYTHING. So yes, certainly. Adblock - Did you not read my post? Minimize to tray - Again, with the buttons that can do anything. Or you can just press ctrl+h (or whatever your keyboard config is) Restart Firefox - buttons, etc.. SessionSaver - If this is something that saves your sessions and such, yes. Opera has native support for this.
If you're really into extensions and you cant find what you need, then you should wait until the stable version. By then, hundreds of widgets will be available.. instead of the test ones that are available now.
Opera doesn?t have an internal adblocker with a UI.
I'd rather not disable GIF animations as well as plugins/sound all together just to get rid of ads. Also, the other methods shown in that article are a bit too tedious just to get rid of ads (like URL filtering).
