I Wasnt looking @ Buying it, I just had the same idea as you guys did, To build one myself (or my dad :D) And that it was to Expensive for the setup as it is. Plus you dont need a great PC for designing, you just need alot of RAM to run things like Cinema 4D which can be a pain on the machine im running now. Oh and dad (Jim B) Can i have your other setup lol wink wink ;) ;)
For your graphics work, (and since you don't want a super-high end machine), I would recommend:
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (Venice core) @ 1.8GHz w/ SSE3 instruction set 2x512MB PC3200 Corsair XMS Platinum Pro (D/C) or 2xKingston HyperX 512MB PC3200 (D/C) or 2x512MB PC3200 OCZ EL Platinum (D/C) MSI K8N Neo 4 Platinum Maxtor DiamondMax 10 w/ 16MB cache or Western Digital SE16 w/ 16MB cache (I would recommend the WD > Maxtor)
That would be a *good* system that wouldn't lag for you any time during graphics work.
The RAM is a waste of money. Some cheap value RAM will be best as the real-world performance difference would be really small and it doesn't sound like you are overclocking. Even if you were overclocking running a divider is fine.
As for the mobo nif you are not overclocking I would suggest a cheap and reliable board like the Chaintech VNF4 Ultra.
While the Maxtor is the fastest 7200 RPM drive, their reliability is pretty poor so I would not suggest them. I would suggest a Seagate. They are not the fastest, but are pretty much the best all-around. They come with a 5 yr. warranty, are very quiet and are still pretty quick. Also when it comes to real-world performance you will notice no difference between the Seagate and the Maxtor. So it is obvious that the best choice would be the one with the longer warranty and is more reliable.
I disagree with the RAM, motherboard, & hard drive part.
Starting with RAM, he needs good stable RAM for his work. I recommended the XMS Platinum as top of the line. It would be ok to go with Value RAM, but the high end will be better in the long run.
Secondly, MSI is a much more reliable company than ChainTech. And now after they have offered their re-energize deal, Outrage can upgrade his CPU to dual core X2 if he wants anytime.
Thirdly, Maxtor is overall, not a very good company. Their drives are loud & noisy, but their 16MB cache drives are award winners. Read any review. Seagate isn't as good as Western Digital. Besides, Seagate does not have 16MB cache drives yet either. Also, Maxtor isn't the fastest 7200RPM drive.
Overall, I would choose Western Digital as the best hard drive company in terms of performance, reliablity, etc. Plus, there were articles (I read somewhere) that Western Digital drives have the longest life.
Hope this further explains my choices of hardware.

Some Corsair VS would be good and stable RAM. My point was the RAM you picked was a waste of money. On an A64 the real-world performance difference from low-latency RAM is very small in most cases making it not worth it. For the price of the RAM you suggested he could get 2GB.

He can upgrade his CPU to an X2 with the Chaintech too. The Chaintech is a very reliable and cheap board.

Again you are completely ignoring what I said. I said the difference between the Seagate and Maxtor would not be noticable. So obviously it would be best to go with the most reliable with the longest warranty. That would be Seagate.

I am saying Western Digital is the best. Better than Seagate. I did not ignore what you said. Sure Seagate has the longest warranty, but WD don't break down that easily and WD's enterprise drives have a 5 year warranty as well. Secondly, MSI is more reliable than ChainTech. In the long run, MSI will be better. Don't go for cheap all the time.
Thirdly, I will find that article and give it to you SAAP.
SysOpt is a very reliable source of information. At least two people in that thread had problems with Seagate and Maxtor failing. And Seagate are not very fast either even if they have the long warranty. This leaves Western Digital, and as you can see in that topic, no one has problems with Western Digital.

First of all, you did ignore what I said. I said you will not notice any performance difference from having 16MB of cache. Also you are judging overall reliability by one forum topic? Wow is all I have to say...
Also where have you heard MSI is more reliabile then Chaintech? The Chaintech board has proven to be a very good and reliabile board. As a matter of fact the MSI K8N neo2 platinum had a lot of problems. I don't know much about the newest ones problems, but how do you come to the conclusion that MSi is more reliable?
