Gaming peripheral manufacturer Razer has announced a sponsorship dealin which two professional gamers will carry the Olympic torch as itmakes its way through China.
"This is symbolic of how much e-sports has grown and is greatfor the advancement of e-sports not only in China, but around theworld,"
You've already seen Trevor McDonaldand Konnie Huq carry the Olympic Torch, and now it's the turn of twoWarcraft III players to march the prestigious flame through the streets.
Jae Ho "Moon" Jang and Li "Sky"Xiaofeng are to carry the flame during its procession to the openingceremony of this year's sports event in Beijing, GGL Wire reports (cheers Kotaku for the tip off).
Apparently, professional StarCraft player Junchun "Pj" Sha will bezerging through the streets carrying the torch too, along with fellowRTS-er Lei "Leilei" Shen.
The Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad,or BOCOG, has chosen ten pro gamers to bear the torch, and two of themare sponsored by Razer, maker of high-end mice and accessories.
Quote:
"Team Razer extends hearty congratulations to Sky and Moon, and wearejust as excited as they are. Being a torch bearer at the Olympics is amomentous event, and this is a historic moment which will remain etchedin their memories," said Robert "Razerguy" Krakoff, president of Razer."This is symbolic of how much e-sports has grown and is great for theadvancement of e-sports not only in China, but around the world."
"It's a great honor for me to be part of something so special. Bearingthe Olympic flame is a once in a lifetime opportunity and one I willtreasure, not only because I’m from China, but also because I represente-sports, which is a discipline growing in popularity," said XiaoFeng "Sky" Li.
This is a pretty cool thing for gamers but, while many of us loveour pasttime, it's hard to see the term "e-sports" catching on. Youcan talk about how "e-sports" are growing, but I won't believe it untilwe have Quake and StarCraft in the games themselves. For extra irony, BOCOG could award a gold medal for gold farming. I would tune in for that.
