It will run fine at DDR 266. I have never heard of a problem with getting too fast of ram. There may be some company that is stupid, but I'm pretty sure it will be perfectly okay.
You have to factor in the amount of RAM though. Upgrading from 512MB to 1GB would make a huge difference in gaming. Making the loss in memory bandwidth not being that big of a deal.
Yep. But it all depends on what it's going to be used for. For the average user, the extra speed will probably matter more then going from 512 to 1GB. But, if you're into gaming, video editing, or picture editing, you'll want the extra ram.
I see your point, but the average user (when I say average I mean browsing the web, checking email, etc.) would not notice any difference at all.
If you need the extra RAM, buy it and don't worry about the loss in memory bandwidth. If you don't need the extra RAM, don't bother.
EDIT - I just realized that he has DDR266 and will be adding a stick of DDR400. In this case both would run at DDR266, which the single stick was runing at before. So there isn't any loss in memory bandwidth from what he currently has.
