1. Jumpers. This method sucks because you have to set many jumpers into different positions.
2. Card (what the A8N-SLI uses). This allows you to basically set all the jumpers at once.
3. Electronic/smart. These detect that you have 2 x16 devices, and set the motherboard to SLI mode. This is more expensive and takes up space, so it is only coming out on newer and sometimes more expensive motherboards.
Its not as simple as telling the software to change the configuration. The leads on the motherboard have to be re-arranged physically.
That is what I would have assumed. The cards idea is a good idea, and better than jumpers. It is especially superior in that you cannot put the jumpers in the wrong places, shorting connections, and you won't have to troubleshoot it.
