@Greg

On your motherboard you have this RAM slot in front of your PCI-Express x1 slots.. Whats it for? Extra graphics card memory?

Thats the SLI selector card.  Tells the motherboard to use 2 x8 slots or 1 x16 and 1 x1

I see.. Is that on all SLi motherboards? Why would they not just have a simple jumper?..

There are 3 methods.

1. Jumpers.  This method sucks because you have to set many jumpers into different positions.

2. Card (what the A8N-SLI uses).  This allows you to basically set all the jumpers at once.

3. Electronic/smart.  These detect that you have 2 x16 devices, and set the motherboard to SLI mode.  This is more expensive and takes up space, so it is only coming out on newer and sometimes more expensive motherboards.

Its not as simple as telling the software to change the configuration.  The leads on the motherboard have to be re-arranged physically.

That is what I would have assumed. The cards idea is a good idea, and better than jumpers. It is especially superior in that you cannot put the jumpers in the wrong places, shorting connections, and you won't have to troubleshoot it.

Don't worry about it. It isn't that hard.

Anyways, which model did you buy?
