Broadband Users: For those of you guys who have broadband weather it basic or 1mb, you can monitor you usage (you will only be allowed so much downloading bandwidth every month for the monthly fee you pay, it might be worth checking it out for those of you who like to download music or other big files, etc) by downloading one of these freeware programs;
Why not visit www.grc.com and run the free test to check the security and quality of your firewall. There is also a good free security scan and virus check on the Norton Symantec website www.symantec.com look for security page.
Windows XP Home/Professional has a built in firewall, it has had a vast improvement included in the new update ?Service Pack 2? this should not be downloaded as it is a massive download and you don't get it all in one go, also, the download has a few little hiccups, like bugs, it's always best to install it from the new available disc, this is free with some computer magazines or you can order direct from the update site at Microsoft, it only takes 4 ? 6 weeks to arrive.
Secure Websites: Double click the small padlock icon in the bottom right corner of your internet browser, the one next to small globe icon and the word ?internet?.
Doing this will enable you see the certificate authenticating a full secure web page, this belongs to the company which you are going to place your card details with, so before you put your bank/card details on the web via this site, check their certificate is valid!! If the certificate is not valid, hackers will pickup your bank/card details and spend YOUR money.
Viruses: There is a great site with removal tools for specific viruses around at the moment, visit www.bitdefender.com look for Bitedefender 8 Professional, you get a 90 day trial with free updates, following the 90 trial, it would only cost a small fee to upgrade to a full version, the program has a great amount of security features, firewall, registry options, etc.
Restoring Deleted Files: Download a free program called ?Restoration? www.snapfiles.com/get/restoation.html this program allows you to recover files deleted from your recycle bin; also, you can recover digital photos from memory cards.
General Stuff: www.irfanview.com is a great free program for resizing and cropping large images that otherwise are to large to do what you are maybe trying to do, i.e. email them!
www.popuptest.com is a free program that allows you to check the strength of you popup blocker. Popup blockers are available free on the web, but if you don't know where to look, the easiest way is to go to either www.msn.com or www.google.co.uk and download the free toolbar, these have popup blockers and other features.
STOP PRESS: Nero has just released a patch to enable Nero 6 the Suite to be fully compatible with Windows XP Service Pack 2, any of you that installed SP2 from disc and already had Nero 6 in your pc, you will have been met with a warning stating that there is a compatibility issue, well, this patch sorts out this problem. There are 6 in total you need to download.
Nice. I bet it costs a ton. ;) I've got 3mbps dsl from SBC, and I've been looking for a good tweaking guide. I haven't really found anything yet. Any good resources?

It was 3MBps, but Comcast upgraded it to 5MBps for free. It usually costs 50$/month, but Comcast offered us a deal of Cable for 40$/month & basic cable for 10$/month. So, we took the 2nd plan. We get cable & TV, but same cost as just cable alone.
Tweaking guide? I will look around. I'll post it soon if I can find one.

Telling people not to download an update is just ignorant. It is always best to slipstream SP2 with your Windows installation to prevent problems. However if your system is malware free you should not have problems with the update.

For best security you shouldn't be using IE anyway.

AntiVir, AVG and Avast are all free and very effective anti-virus solutions.

That is a great program. You could also wipe files to prevent recovery using the same program.
