[edit]: oops, i thought someone said they were afraid of going DEF. lol
Quote:
i def don't wanna spend over 200 on a sound card n speakers....
even crap can make you go def. it's about quality, and just because you have that extra power doesnt mean you'll have to turn it up till your ears bleed.
and if you tame your sound and adjust it right, you can turn it up more just to feel it (with out hurting your ears).
i've spent $4000 on my car stereo lol, and even though i have about 2500+ watts of power (1800 watt mono block sub amp, 800 watt full range amp) doesnt mean i have to kill myself lol. sometimes it's good to have a little power. i've got three 12 in subs in the back on the 1800 amp, and just 2 full range components in the front on the 800 watt amp. 800watts probably sound like alot for a couple of 6in woofers and 2 tweeters, but this way i have a clean signal and tight response without the distortion from low power and weak voltage output.
it's awesome cause you can feel the volcals go through your chest, or if you're holding a cup it will vibrate LOL. warm mids dont hurt your ears like the high pitched highs. you can always tone down ear bleeding highs and still have a nice clean crisp detailed high. and of course the bass, cutting out and directing that high bass to the mids will let your subs go deep and hit tight low notes that sometimes you can only feel because the human ear just doesnt understand what the sperm whale is trying to say. lol
oh yea, and i bought a nice Eclipse cd deck with 8volt preamp out; this way i'll have the cleanest signal possible and that will tremendously help with quality and power. which is why your sound card is the weakest link. and although the best sound card will make your old speakers sound better, your speakers will be holding your cards biggest potential quality behind.

Perhaps you are correct, but I would much rather spend money on a 6800GT and then overclock it to great heights. If you are not willing to overclock, then go for an X800XL.

The X800 XL is build on the 110nm process which should be a Monster Overclocker. The only game the 6800GT beats the X800 XL in is Doom 3.
HL-2, FarCry, Painkiller & Halo etc. all lean towards the ATI X800 XL. :)
Both cards are amazing, but I rather spend $100 less for the X800 XL. ;)
