wow that is a really long post   hahaha. Yeh, Gorbachev was a rubbish Communist - he demolished the Berlin Wall, gave the Eastern bloc its freedom and effectively started the collapse of the USSR. Stalin would have been turning in his grave if Khrushchev had not removed his body! I take it that you are very interested in Soviet/Cold War history - so am I!

I believe that Gorbachev was a good man - he tried his best to reform the wreck that USSR had become due to the actions of its former leaders. He didn't kill innocent people as Stalin had done. He was certainly much better than his predecessors! (although I do think that Khrushchev, despite being stubborn, was not too bad - although he was leader at the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis, we must remember that the event was provoked by the USA - they put nuclear weapons right on the USSR's doorstep)

More on War and Video Games, I saw some of this arounf the internet...

Quote:
I was just wondering apart from the obvious Medal of Honour and Call to Arms systems what games would people recommend - (Can be any game on any system and has to be a conflict from Vietnam onwards). This is all funded so will be able to get any system to play them on, so looking forward to some good suggestions.

I'd have to say Battlefield:Vietnam and Battlefield 2. The fact that they are online games (so when your shooting an enemy soldier in the face it is another person behind the keyboard) surely adds more to the study?

Also, 'Commandos' Non FPS war based game. Can't remember what sort of year they are set in though.

http://www.wwiionline.com/scripts/wwiionline/index.jsp - This is an 'MMORPG' of sorts about wait.. okay.. well that's world war 2 so you may not want it but still interesting i would imagine. As you, supposedly, 'role-play' a part in that war.

http://www.americasarmy.com/ - you can play this as a uk resident. This was MADE by the american army, presumably to get their residents to sign up to the real thing.

Advance Wars on the Nintendo DS or GBA is a must.
And Civilization 4, not strictly a war game but eye opening for me, you own an empire, and must grow from ancient times to modern. You can be totally peaceful if you wish, if you want a tiny, un-sucessful empire that is. The only way to be be prosperous is war, and when there is no war, society, and your civilization, stagnates.

The Conflict series would fit into the period. Special notice should be paid to a vietnam game called shellshock or something like that, btiefly played the game and the menus nd other such aspects of the game have an apocalypse now format, could be interesting. Another but sklighty out of the ball park could possibly be the metal gear solid series, although fictional and ridiculous the literate and non fictional content could be interesting. It talks about many different connotations of war and peace.

Is Advance Wars modern warfare? I suppose so, bearing in mind the planes available. But it seems to have a timeless feel to it. And the interface being so removed from the realities of real war is gotta be worth a mention. It's like 'A-team war' where nobody dies.

Further to that, I think the beauty is because it's unambiguously that. A game. In the mould of chess, whereby the "pieces" all have their rules of movement etc etc. So far removed from ('scuse the phrase) 'war simulators' and indeed war itself, that it seems frivolous to use the term 'war' in it's title. Plus, I always wince when saying the title out loud cos war games (broad term) to me have connotations of 'forces guys that never were' who spend all day watching WWI/II progs on channel five and the History channel.

'Civilization' (in title alone) brings about a much more balanced mental image of itself, before you even get to the game mechanics.

The thing about AW is that it's not based on any one specific or real conflict, which seems to rule it out of vaifan_2006's plans.

However, each faction is themed after a certain army or nation - Orange Star is a sterotyped view of the US, Blue Moon represents the Soviet nations, Yellow Comet is Imperial Japan and Green Earth supposedly represents WWII Europe, though I find the last one harder to see myself. (Black Hole is a fictional sci-fi future army in later games, though it's not evident in AW1.) There's also an element of cold war tension between Orange and Blue, and the original AW1 world map is very loosely based on Earth geography, with Orange Star in the west, Blue Moon to the east and Yellow Comet inhabiting some familiar-looking islands at the edge of the eastern landmass.

So it's a worthy study for seeing how armies/nations are stereotyped regarding warfare, I think. Each army has a consistent design for its own units, though different armies are pulled from different periods of the 20th century, and the COs and their theme tunes are similarly styled.

Battalion Wars, as mentioned earlier, also carries this basic Orange/Blue/Yellow theme of cold war-era Earth, though Yellow plays a substantially different part in the story.

Um if I recall wasn't there a game they had to recall or change or something cuz it showed the world trade center. there was a big issue about it when the USA was attacked on 9/11.

I think they had to remove the WTC from many things; not just games, although I can't quote a specific title

Even among some military veterans, support for the war in Iraq is dwindling.
As reported by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, veteransof the war gathered to protest recently at the Missouri Black Expo. Thefocus of their attention was a display of the America’s Army video game:
Quote:

About 90 Iraq war veterans, dressed in black shirts, stood in formation Saturday afternoon in front of military recruitersat America’s Center and shouted their protest message three times: “Waris not a game!”

They were referring to the large military simulation game set up by Army recruiters… The group of veterans, known as Iraq Veterans Against the War, were in St. Louis for their annual meeting this weekend when they decided to stage
a brief demonstration at the Expo.

America’s Army was created several years ago by the Department ofDefense. The PC version, a first-person shooter using simulatedmilitary weapons, is given away for free by the Army as a recruitmentand public relations tool.
Here’s the video of the IVAW protest:

According to a game developer, the US government stores player data on its servers, and sends invitations to join the Army to particularly skilled players.
