Verizon FIOS Useless

What is the use of Verizon FIOS? If you get their 15MBps/10MBps deal, will you really be browsing at that speed? No. You will most probably never even get past 1MBps because most websites you visit, the servers powering those websites will not be able to handle your request fast enough. Now, you may ask then what is the use of T1, etc. If you have multiple computers networked together and sharing a single cable/DSL line, then T1/T3/OC will be useful. But for one computer, Verizion FIOS as well as all other 5MBps deals are useless. Period.

What do you guys think about this? Sorry to be so blatant, but for the average home user, even for an enthusiast, there will be no difference between a 2MBps connection and a 5MBps connection.

It won't help in most circumstances, unless you're downloading from multiple sites at once, or using P2P.

Like Bit Torrent where upload speed actually matters.

Also, some download managers can get files from multiple sites at once, so it would help there, too.

With Verizon FIOS, you can upload about 2MB/sec and download even more.

But, BitTorrent is the only use I see to this.

While you are correct that sometimes there are servers that are extremely slow anyway so having a 5mbps connection won't help, but I know when RR upgraded my connection to 5mbps I definitely noticed a difference. This is before I even knew they upgraded it too so it has nothing to do with placebo effect.

Placebo effect. Is that where something just seems faster, because it is supposed to be, but it really isn't any faster?
What was your connection before 5mbs?

In the way I was using the term \"placebo effect\" is when a person thinks they feel a performance difference when there really is not a difference. It is basically caused by the expectations of there being an increase in performance. So, yes, you are right. For example, when somebody disables system services or follows some other stupid tweaking guide for an increase in system performance it is almost always placebo effect.

My connection before the upgrade was around 3mbps I believe. It was a while ago though.

Wow, you saw an increase over 3mbps? Is that for just normal everyday browsing, or for downloading that you see a difference?
If it's for just browsing, I'd say what the difference is is actually a better latency.

I saw a difference between my 3MBps & 8MBps, but from 3-5, I see no difference.

Was that for browsing or download that you saw a difference?

btw, you've got 8mbps? Boy, is that fast!
