This media player is amazing - it will play any Media file, any codec, anything. It is simple and lightweight to run and launch yet is extremely powerful with ever feature you could need to play your media.
VideoLAN is a project that develops software for playing video and other media formats. It originally developed two programs for media streaming—VideoLAN Client (VLC) and VideoLAN Server (VLS)—but most of the features of VLS have been incorporated in to VLC, with the result renamed VLC media player.
VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, ...) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.
At http://www.videolan.org you can get screen shots, a detailed overview and even skins for VideoLAN.
Here is a screenshot of a pretty normal, clean default setup, playing a DVD codec via VideoLAN player... the screenshots section of their site is full of quite unique set ups with skins or on linux systems - but you can have a look at the link below.
yes it does have to be said that VLC media player is pretty good at what it does - i love the fact that however obscure your video/audio format may be it will probably be able to play it.
I LOOOOOOVEEEE VLC!!! Unlike WMP, it plays DVDs (no expensive add ons to buy) and plays virtually everything including QuickTime files so no iTunes + QuickTime nonsense!
I also have it on my USB drive for times I'm at a non VLC computer.
I use Windows Media Player and PowerDVD to play all media files (also DVD Video) without paid add-ons. Apearance of VLC above is not nice. Maybe thre are better skins.
Yes you can get skins for the VLC media player - what you've got to understand is that it's a very powerful piece of software which was only really intended to stream media, but because of it's advanced features it can be used as a stand alone media player. Another good thing about the VLC media player is that it comes with a dvd codec which most free media players dont come with.
However saying that their are downsides to it's UI, especially the fact that the DVD functions arn't great - but if people don't want to pay for Cyberlink PowerDVD (which is the best out there) then it's a good alternative.
I tend to not use VLC as my main media player, but stick with iTUnes because of the iTunes store, podcasts, videos and basically library management, and the options available, with visualisations and things - though for playing individual media files and codecs, VLC is great!
same with me really - i donwload programes (legally) which come in the DivX codec - and although I've got DivX Pro - they were giving it away it's much simpler to play it in vlc
