The rumors are true. Today Western Digital formally announces the successor to its beloved (but rather small) Raptor WD740GD. The new WD1500 doubles capacity to 150 gigabytes and features a host of improvements aimed at elevating the family's performance and reliability to a new level.

Yep, I heard about this 2-3 weeks ago. This new one will support SATA2 & have 16MB cache as well.

I just finished. Seems to do well when compared with other SATA drives, but gets defeated by SCSI.

Defeated by SCSI?  I don't know about that, or at least in a lot of cases.  The 15K SCSIs might win, but I think it beats 10K SCSI drives.

In the single user performance, the Raptors dominated. I will agree that the Raptors provide a good price/performance ratio when compared to SCSI, but I hear that Seagate's 15,000RPM Cheetah's are coming to SATA...so we'll see then.

Wow, if that happens, it'll be cool to see.
I wonder how noisy 15K drives are.

Sounds impressive. The only concern besides the noise level with these extreamly fast drives is that the speed may reduce the life-time of the drive.

Both Western Digital & Seagate have 5 year warranties. And people who buy these drives will most likely not even keep it for 3-4 years.

Looking good.  If I ever get around to upgrading my hard drive I may have to pick one of these up.

It's 300$. I think you'd be better off buying a 160GB WD 16MB cache SATAII for about 100$, because you'd get more space.

Thats not the point.  The point is it's the fastest hard drive you can get on the SATA interface.

If you got 2 of those 160GB drives you mentioned, (in RAID-0) you would have about the same performance, but more chance for failure.

Yes, but I still don't think the 300$ justifies it.
