and people over clock hard drives

No, they don't. Unless they want to ruin their drive.

First of all, I've never heard of a HD being OCed.
Secondly, I think it would work just fine, as long as it's a very slight overclock.

I don't know of overclocked hard drives, but if they do manage to do it, more heat would be generated, and that can cause errors, corruption, and dead drives.

HDs don't produce a whole lot of heat, at least not as bad as like cpus and video cards.

My 2x 80GB drives produce a hell of a lot of heat.  Without a fan, they can heat up 1/2 the case in 10 minutes.  However, with an 80mm fan blowing over them both, they stay just a few degrees above ambient.  Make sure you have fans on your harddrives people.

I'd put a fan on my HDD if it wasn't in the same cage as my FDD.. Maybe I'll move some stuff around.

I guess hard drives can be overclocked by increasing the rotation speed. But I think this is too simple an idea, because the sensors would not be set right to read/write data at a new speed. A motor running over its suggested voltage also reduces its length of life, and it will obviously generate more heat.

You can increase the platters RPM rate by overvolting the drive, but this will most likely lead to a broken/corrupted drive. It would be really stupid to even attempt it unless you have an old drive that you feel like destroying.

No you arent. You don't even know how to change the rotational speed.  I bet no one in here does.

I have actually overclocked a harddrive by increasing the electromagnetic charge in the spinners and on the reader itself.

The result: The drive exploded and I got a nasty burn on my hand. Dont try this at home kids!!!!

take the hard drive out and take off the plastic block at the end of the power cord and put the wires in your electrical socket. if you survive come back and tell us what happens.

Also, if you have time, insert a plug into your mains with the wires from it attached to your head. Make sure the live wire is connected properly though, else you won't see the magic secret.
