When I ask what is a gamer? the most typical reply would be some one who games. But what really makes a gamer a gamer? some people would call them selfs gamers but only play like one or 2 games or play certian game types only. Now its your turn now tell me What is a Gamer.?

I'd say im a true gamer. www.xfire.com/profile/takeda101

But I think a gamer is someone who plays all genres, and has a general skill at them. Personally Ive played so many games i can pick up a controller / mouse / keyboard and be good at the game.

The definition of a hardcore gamer is someone who is usually a male, between 14 – 34 years of age who has gaming in their top priority list, for example, someone who would prefer to play a game instead of sleeping at night or watching TV. Basically a game addict. With a very high technical knowledge on computer, console hardware and the whole computer industry in general, they keep up-to date with the latest technological advancements. Many are financially independent and make purchasing decisions themselves.

In comparison, a regular gamer is someone who would play a game occasionally to entertain him/her self. The age group is varied, ranging from kids to seniors. Mainly being kids whose purchasing decisions are based on their parent’s willingness to purchase games for their child. Obviously, most parents don’t encourage their children to play PC or console games. Therefore they usually play very few games per year and their computer or console systems rarely get updated. Usually, they are not game enthusiasts and do not contribute significantly to the industry.

I basically agree with GGN 100% on this but I would have to add that anyone who enjoys games I would concider to be a gamer. I consider my self a gamer I have alot of computer games and basically one of my favorite geners is the sims 2 series lol. I also like FPS Sports games and some RPG'S. Im not really a dedicated gamer though as alot of games I have never beaten.

I agree with both of you. To be a true gamer, you must have a lot of time to be online or counsel gaming a lot. Most people have school, jobs, and careers and can't be online to be playing games a lot. I guess it all depends on what perpective you look at it.

Hey, I can say I am a gamer but not a true one. I play games when I get the chance but not everyday.

I could play games everyday if I wanted too. But I choose to do other things such as keep active on this forum and also get out and walk when the weather is good.

MYNA's Description of a TRUE gamer:

Someone who is not biased between consoles and PC's or between different consoles, isnt biased to a genre of game, they may not specifically play all genres but they do not hate any of them, also they must own many games and also be willing to try new never before seen games like the outfit for instance.

I think Myna here has a pretty good overall summery of a true gamer. I wouldn't say anything much different then what this person said.

There is no such thing as a 'gamer.' It is no longer a hobby that only certain 'nerds' do regularly. You can't define a 'gamer' anymore, everyone does it. May I insert a small rant here which I saw in a magazine called HYPER>> a few months ago?

With the exception of Jack Thompson or the OFLC, few topics of conversation raise the ire of gamers than the dreaded ‘casuals’. You already know what I mean, but I’ll explain it anyway.

Anecdotal evidence would suggest that ‘casuals’ are the bane of our existence. They’re the ones to blame for all the dross on our shelves. It’s not just that they’re ignorant. Oh no, they are in fact conspiring to make the most appalling of purchasing decisions until our stores are deluged with generic, bland sequels and rip-offs.

It’s easy to imagine your average ‘casual’ gamer as the sort of V8-driving, 4X-drinking, blue-singlet wearing bogan who couldn’t find his own arse with both hands, a torch and the Beaconsfield Mine Rescue Team. These are the guys who will walk into a game store and emerge with a copy of Rumble Roses or Xtreme Beach Volleyball, and a hole in their wallets to rival the ones in their thick skulls.

They determine which games to buy not on the basis of reviews or research. No, they just wander in and find the games with the biggest explosions, fastest cars, and fakest boobs on the box art. Trying to convince them that the likes of Kirby or Beyond Good and Evil are brilliant games is likely to result in cries of ‘I’m not playing that kiddie sh*t!’

There’s a chance they could be persuaded to play Metroid prime or Metal Gear Solid, but they’re unlikely to persist with them once they discover success requires more than holding down the fire button until everything blows up. These are the idiots who take the likes of 50 Cent: Bulletproof to the top of the charts while the Psychonauts and Icos languish in bargain bin obscurity.

Tempting as it may be to believe the above, the disappointing reality is that casual gamers are much more than this. Gaming is now something almost everyone does; but not everyone is a gamer. Just as everyone watches films but few people are film buffs. Only enthusiasts build model ships or knit teddy bears, but gaming has now emerged from a niche hobby to a mainstream past-time.

The true face of casual gaming is much more sedate. It’s your kid sister playing Nintendogs. It’s your grandma playing Brain Training. It’s the housewife playing a few minutes of Bejewelled between emails. It’s the bored office worker playing solitaire instead of working. It’s your mate renting V8 Supercars and even that annoying kid from the under-12s soccer who keeps banging on about The Sims.

So as much as we may lament the commercial failure of the most critically acclaimed titles, we just have to accept that this is the reality of mainstream acceptance. In truth, a larger audience overall means not only more money for development of new systems and blockbusters, but a market more capable of supporting those niche games we love so much.

Just remember, there will come a day, when you and I are just old, todays casual are Hardcore, and today's anti-technologists are plain annoying as usual. And the new babies will be Casual.

dunno bout that, a casual gamer would be someone who plays a game a few hurs a day. Sometimes (not that much anymore) i would just stock up on food and drink and play a game for about 15 hours non stop lol.

I find now ive played so many games across so many genres i am instantly good at them when i first start to play them. : Eg i can beat my friends in there own game tht i have never played before.

I find the same. But what I am saying, is that in the future, us people who play games religiously will miss the old stuff, the stuff like CoD2 and Empire Earth, and maybe the Battlefield 1942 or Battlefield2, will get looked on as old, like the people who now say the old days were so much better, and say that the gaming industry has massively declined.

One day we will be the oldies, and instead of the hardcore, we'll just be old moaning farts.
