Which Next Gen Console?

Original Post by carnageX...
Well, my vote goes to the PS3.  Second would go to the Wii (Revolution).  The 360, in my opinion, is cr4p.  Microsoft is the downfall of gaming =P.  Sony and Nintendo are, IMO, the only good ones.  Nintendo is revolutionary, and creative, and Sony has a lot of games that I like, and with their PS3, it's going to own.  Nintendo and Sony will whipe the floor with the 360.

Oh, and on a side note... Halo is over-rated, and the only thing holding Xbox up .  If you wish to argue, then by all means, argue, because I have many points to prove you wrong =P.

Id vote in this order (1 being best):

1.  PS3 - sony's games and graphics have always impressed me, they seem to get it right every time. Also, from what i have seen from reviews and videos, it has the most realistic feel to it.  It also has the smartest AI.

2. Nintendo wii (or Revolution) - origional playing style, I guess its trying to get kids to move a bit, grapghics are very good, but not a s good as PS3 or XBox360 graphics.  Hoewever, this is being marketed as a gaming system for everyone, and will be sold cheaper than other consoles.

3. XBox360 - The 1st of the new generation consoles.  Within the first 24 hours people had sent theirs back, due to problems with XBox360 LIVE, and the wireless controllers. However, this did not stop it from being a hit christmas item along with the PSP. Also,  from what i have played on it, the incredible graphics were similar to the PhysicsX graphics cards, at a franction of the price. (The Alienware ALX has this, and costs nearly $4000 USD).

EDIT: You know that the bit about the PSP being a Christmas hit is a lie. Look at the sales figures and you'll see that the DS outsold the PSP over 3 and 1/2 times over the Christmas period. And any PSP priced compy would look good on a screen that bloody small. It's not fricking hard. Just imagine how awesome Alienware would look if you shoved it on a small screen like that? The PS3 isn't that great, if you've seen actual comparisons between identical copies of games on the PS3 and XBox 360 they show that the XBox 360 versions are a lot cleaner. The only game on the PS3 I will want is Assassins Creed, in March 2007. - Spakkeh aka Jonny

I've already justified why I think the 360 is better, in summary, I think price is a big issue, and a few other things; a slight difference in "power" is really not a deciding factor on which console i'd buy. See the Xbox 360 Forum.

I will buy a Wii because it's enough cheap and has many good games. But I also need an XBOX 360 for Halo 3...

The only problem whit X360 is the game supply. Therea era not too much exclusive and innovative games for it... At the moment I can say only three titles: PGR 3, Halo 3, and of course DOA 4. And maybe GTA 4, but I'm sure they will release it to the PC too...

The xbox 360 is still relatively new, the game industry for it is still picking up momentum. There are a fair number of games coming out for the 360 though - more than what you have just listed. I'm sure that they will release GTA 4 on PC - they'll earn even more money doing that.

I think what Chocho meant, was that they are the only exculsive games that stood out too him, same with me really; but then again, could you affor more than 4 games at once? Thats £200, nearly as much as the console itself, then you have to find the time to play them.

That's not microsoft philosophy. We all wanted Halo 2 on PC, but they wanted us to buy Xboxes, only now are they releasing a two year old port on PC with a few extras on PC. GTA 4 is different, although if they have the exclusive rights, which they did with Halo 2, they'd probably release it on Xbox 360 only. Xbox dont have exclusive rights to GTA4 so yes, it will probably be out on PC after a while.

And if you are thinking of getting Halo 2 for PC now, think again, Microsoft are up to their tricks again, and they want us to buy Vista, so Halo 2 will only run on Windows Vista.

I have a legitimate MSDN Copy of Windows Vista Ultimate that will get updated as it's developed, as i'm a member of MSDN and TechNet so, I get Halo 2    I'll have a 360 buy then, to play Halo 3 next year, but Halo 2 is out for Christmas

One of the reasons that Halo2 is going to be vista only is they are developing it to be a DX10 game.
this is where many of the enhancements are comming from.
So not only will you need Vista but DX10 hardware (ATi should be first to market with DX10 Hardware).

Although I am not certain of this I believe the reason for DX10 being Vista only is that many of the DX routines are going to be virtual services.
A release to bring XP up to date would be an almost impossible task.

Again my 2 cents (I think I am up to 4 cents now   )

I haven't really considered DirectX, I suppose Ive always had an up to date grahics card, however, Can you play a DirectX 9 game ona DX8 Card? I'm not sure, but I could always download the latest version of DX, even when my grahics card was older than that release; so theoretically, it should be playable on XP, with DX10 installed, and if necessary, a DX10 Grahics Card.
However, yes, with the great advantages in DX10, It may make an upgrade to XP wioth DX10 impossible. I already have DX10 in my Vista  Machine, but obviously there are no games to see the difference.

That aside, considering the game is a 2 year old port, unless theyhave totally rebuilt the grahics (whih I doubt) shouldn't the game be made for XP and DX9? As when Halo 2 was released, I think It was only DirectX 8 or 9, and I don't think we are expecting any amazing grahics in this 2 year old port. A current computer is lenghts better than the Xbox.

From the Bungie Site
Quote:
Halo 2 Xbox players will continue to play against Xbox and Xbox 360 players, and Halo 2 PC players will play against other PC players. Although we will support other control methods, including joystick vs. mouse, the player will always have the choice, so if he feels confident he can beat a mouse-player online, that's his prerogative. We won't be forcing him. A game like Shadowrun was built from the ground up to run on both platforms with finely balanced cross-platform gameplay. We don't have that luxury, and instead intend to make the Vista version of Halo 2 the best it can be. Add to that the fact that we will have new maps built specifically for the Vista version and a map editor, and cross-platform matchmaking becomes even more complex and less realistic.

There using such an aged game to launch the new O; and they wouldn't dream of releasing Halo 3 on PC would they?.

So Microsoft are not releasing Halo 2 on Vista for DX10...

No. Although you will require Windows Vista to play Halo 2 on a PC, you won't necessarily need to upgrade your graphics card to do it. Halo 2, like some other Vista titles, will work just fine on a wide range of graphics cards, including DX9 cards. We will provide far more detailed minimum hardware requirements closer to the game's completion.

due to the nature of the DX10 API is is not going to be practical to make a dsitrobution for XP.
Vista is new to its core.
many services that are used in XP are now virualized at the hardware level.
it would take an almost complete re-write of XP to add those in.

you can play a DX9 game on DX8 hardware... however you do lose some of the more advanced graphics support.
HDR (for example) would not be available to a DX8 GPU.
The same can be said for the new functions in Halo2.
Remember the Grpahics industry is at a stage where the GPUs are more efficient and powerfull than the CPUs we use.
DX10 will bring even more functionality to our games.

I wish MS would write a distro for XP but is not really feasable.
