I wish MS would write a distro for XP but is not really feasable.
a) The game is a 2 year old port, (so the grahics could easily be handles by XP)
b) Bungie has announced the game won't require DX 10 but will require vista...
But... Yes, in Microsoft's eyes, it wouldn't be feasable, would it?
I have heard that it will not require DX10 before but the information I have is that it will.
do not forget .net frameworks 3.0 is also going to be included in Vista.
There are mnay changes to Vista that could be cause for the Vista Only format.
As far as it being a 2 year old game... How many re-releases of Doom or HalfLife did we see before HalfLife 2 or Doom 3?
it is not uncommon for game devs to do this.
I am not saying I am happy about it but looking from a development standpoint I can see the need to give a better gaming experience.
Plus is never hurts to offer a game designed especially for your new OS.
It is good; although Halo 3 would have been better, and we will have high expectations of Halo 2 on PC; I dont see the actual need for .net framework 3 or even DX10 in Halo 2 port. Also, I got the answer that Halo 2 will not Require DX 10 and Will requre Vista from Bungie.net Weekly updates, and after emailing bungie themselves.
...we [Microsoft] have decided to rename WinFX to the .NET Framework 3.0. .NET Framework 3.0 aptly identifies the technology for exactly what it is – the next version of our developer framework.
I think halo 2 may be re-developed (or ported) on the latest development tools, without a doubt, but the framework has not be available for developers and also DX10 has not been around for too long to allow for development of Halo 2; this is why they are not using DX10 to full lengths, and it will not require it in recommended requirements.
The new Microsoft Office, Expression Suite, WMP and all will work on XP, but yes there are many enhancements and advances to bring the OS up to the standards of OSX
Microsoft has done this before; but also it isn't always a bad thing; although it doesnt always mean the game can't be run on XP, it is just not supported for XP, and they usually make it so the Installer cant be run on XP, like thay did with Age of empires 3.(http://www.joystiq.com/2005/09/08/age-of-empires-3-demo-released-requires-windows-xp/)
Having Vista as a baseline avoids several hassles and helps reduced the testing burden, which saves a LOT of money from the ever expanding development budget.
I am looking at it this way, however...
Are you still upset that you cant play doom 3 on your windows 95 machine?
It's just moving forward, be it for technical reasons that we have stated, and for marketing
Im going to get Vista as soon as it comes out, and I bet most gamers will, so it really isn't a problem.
That forum also has people reporting successfully running the demo on seriously underspecced PCs
We will see what technologies it uses when it is released however... As it will have a new map editor and many new maps, and hopefully features, and some next gen grahics. It will be disapointing if it doesnt have next gen grahics and requires vista to be honest, but also I think Vista will handle games better, (see my latest post in The Great Debates > PC vs Console).
Also There probably won't be a Mac port, if it's Microsoft/Bungie doing the porting. There was a Mac port of Halo 1 because Gearbox did the porting and they could. Now, knowing that Bungie is originally a Mac-based gaming company, they -might-, but if Halo 2 is using DX10 for it's rendering (they would be rewriting the graphics code so it's not DX8 anymore from the xbox, most likely) then there's no way it'll be on the Mac. Halo 1 for PC was OpenGL so it worked on both.
@Admin,
I know that came from MS/Bungie however if you remember right we were also told that Vista would have a new files system only a few short months ago.
I sometimes think that MS changes thier minds more often than most people change their socks.
Some of the rumors I have heard for the Vista only requirement:
it will be HD gaming content
DX10
Virtualized subsystems (sound, AI etc)
use of Aero Glass in menus and other in games screens
there are more.
Any of which could be right or wrong.
I do not know for certain. All I do know is that they are saying it is not going to be an ordinary port.
I think it will use HD content, (Next-gen grahics), but we will wait and see, although I, and I'm sure most other gamers won't mind upgrading
I also heard that Vista will be the first gaming orientated OS, and it gives games their own section on the start menu, with a manager with box art, and direct access to support, performance ratings, PEGI rating intergration; you can even set time limits for how long you want to play. Also Microsoft found that most crashes were due to Grahics (although how many of us use the Windows error reporting?). You can also use the 360 contol pad, made by microsoft on Vista, and use it to navagate the desktop. There are Game-Friendly options in the control panel, and more! I really can't wait for vista Oh... I already have it; I cant wait for the first Vista Games, aside Halo 2, there will be Flight Simulator X. The landscape is modelled 16 times more detail in the previous versions of Microsoft Flight Simlulator; and 24,000 international airport, and also real city landscapes (your house might be on there ); and you could use the 360 contoller! There are amazing water effects from what I have seen, and real time lighting and views, 3D Clarity stretches right off the horizon, and glare (proper glare) is visible as su hits the paintwork and textures... The days of sterile environments are long gone... hopefully we migth see some fully destructable environments in Halo 2, and some of the effects we will see in Halo 2. These games look to be utilising the extra space given by DVD formats, and in Flight Simulator (this is from the Nvidia Magazine)
Quote:
With such detail and scale, every gamer will have the opportunity to fly right over their own hometown, even navagating on the streets below!
You have to credit microsoft for their 360, and what they have done with IE 7...
I'm a Mac (Ok, XP too ) user... and here I am saying...
Vista is coming guys.
I use both as well, My MAC is for my vidoe editing.
You still cannot beat Finalcut (with all the trimmings) motion and DVD-Studio Por for editing.
Add shake in and you can make a full length moving on a laoptop
I have my vairous PCs. (I do product testing and reviews for another site) and I have everything I need. I also have Vista both x64 and x86. they are very nice for a BETA.
I hope to see them finished and cannot wait for the final version and some games and apps to run on it.
Thats the right way to go; I am not operating system specific in any way; what sites do you test software for? Maybe if you get time, go to Articles and Review and do a quick review there
I would think that a the PS2 is the most Mainstream console, logically the PS3 will be a polular choice, and an Xbox 360 for many people. I think maybe the Nintendo console, however innovative, may be a little too innovative, and more suited to the Eastern Audience; where it will probably be most popular; and the Xbox 360 doesn't do as well atall over in Japan, but does in the West The PS3 will probably have the most sales; closely followed by the Xbox 360.
360 is great, keep it hooked up to Live all the time and you have on demand multiplayer. Do not underestimate the addictivness of Live and those damn achievements really drag out a games life, gotta get 'em all (pinched from Nintendo)
The Wii looks like the most exciting, new ways to play, games not focus on added shininess and the Nintendo factor. In the ideal world, this console will win this generation, but its not and that leaves only the victor...
PS3. I hate the console, I hate the idiots behind it, yet I hate the idiot typing this even more because he's going to buy one anyway. But not at that hyperinflated price. I can't believe that boomerang pad was dropped for a gimmicky dual shock, why didn't they refine the design rather than just go back to its ancient design. Sony are relying on blind faith too much, but I can't see them losing out. This'll hurt even more than Marketplaces microtransactions.
Well you have certainly summed up what most of us think; the PS3 is a mainstream console. and is widely worshipped by certain less respected members of the gaming community; less of which are members here. I will go the the 360 because the Nintendo stuff is ok at first, but maybe it will ware off after a while

If its USA....nearly everyone woud choose Wii
However half might say 360/ps3
