I have 3 movies in .AVI format on a 4.7GB DVD drive. I played it on a laptop last night, and it worked fine in Windows Media Player. Today, downstairs, I popped it into the DVD drive, and when I double click it in My Computer, My Computer stops responding, and I have to close it in Task Manager. Then, I downloaded DefilerPak and got all the necessary codecs, and updated to version 10 of WMP. I tried again, this time through WMP, File -> Open, I double click the drive, WMP hangs. Anyone know what the problem is? Thanks.

Try to access the files using different video software.
Are you positive that the drive isn't croaking?
There might also be a problem with the drive's buffer keeping the TOC from whatever disc you had in it last time. I know this used to be a problem with Win95/98, but I've seen it a couple of times on XP. Go into your System and eject the drive using the eject option from properties [needs to be a software eject, not from the button on the physical drive]. That should clear the buffer.

Yes, drive is fine. Here's the prob. When I right click, it just hangs there too. Oh and I got this new error message when I tried to open it and I just let it sit:
Ok, I right clicked, and this time, I let it sit there for about 30 seconds, and it finally showed the options for left clicking. I clicked Eject. Now, I've popped it in again. Sorry Chris, it still freezes up when trying to open it.
It doesn't do this for every disc...it plays CD's fine...I haven't tried any other DVD's...
I am downloading Nero as we speak.

I know that Nero's InCD sometimes conflict with antivirus software due to wrong values in the registry and that could possibly cause the problem.
I've already assumed you've rebooted, but have you tried safe mode?
Another option is to stop all services with services.msc and then restart them one at a time. Lengthy, but might give you a a better idea as to what could be causing the problem.
Sorry I can't be more of a help Predator :(
I'd try another DVD before doing all of that though. There might be a problem with the DVD player on your desktop having problems reading the table of contents for the disc.

Thanks. I tried using Nero ShowTime, and it won't work. I'll try safemode next. If that doesn't work either, then I'll just boot into Linux, and hopefully, I can play the DVD through there.

Reading a ton of stuff on it right now. Lots of Toshiba laptop drives having the problem with no real definitive answer.
The list is long for possible reasons:
Nero's Incd AVG Antivirus causing some obscure registry change Firmware issues Cheaply made discs Drivers corrupt/not installed correctly
And on and on and on.
I just installed Nero. The problem was present before Nero was ever on there. I don't have any antivirus. I tried in Linux, but I had to use a LiveCD, so I was not able to play any other discs. I might try sticking the disc in my PS2, and see if that works, or otherwise, take my DVD burner from upstairs, stick it downstairs, and watch.

The laser in the drive can't read the disk. It might be old or malfunctioning. Copy the files to the laptop and reburn them. Burn them at the slowest possible speed. Try using good media too (Tayio Yuden), not some crap you got for free with your drive. Also, this isn't necessary, but if you have DVD+R's and a DVD burner that supports bitsetting set the booktype to DVD-ROM for increased compatibility. You may have to upgrade the firmware to one that supports bitsetting.
Also, stop using crap like WMP.

I am only using WMP because I recently reformatted the computer, and I haven't had time to reinstall everything. Anyways, the drive reads CD's correctly...no idea why DVD's won't work.
