You. Your friends and family. Your classmates and coworkers. In thebrave new world of the internet, everybody has power. Thenerdy kid next door has just as much influence as a high schoolteacher; the dorky dude at the comic book shop has just as much voiceas a college professor.
Problem is, the nerds and dorks tend to have a lot morefree time - and passion - than the teachers and professors. The endresult? A hilariously skewed, terrifyingly twisted view of the world inwhich all the wrong things are deemed "important" and worthy of seriousacademic discussion.

See what we mean? When the deadliest, costliest war in the history of mankind has been trumped by a videogame franchise about that war,you know something's off. One involved over 50 countries and took over70 million lives; the other involves button mashing and tea bagging.
On an encouraging note, we did have to add all the Call of Dutygames' individual pages together to reach the crazy number above. On adiscouraging note, we didn't have to add Call of Duty 4 and itsnon-WWII setting, which would have brought the total word count to aneven crazier 18,927.

Why wouldn't the entries for the glorious Starship Enterprise dwarf that for a dusty museum piece like the automobile? We expect the pages for hoverboards, robot maids, personal time machines and giant laser death rays to do the same.

For the present, though, why does a make-believe spaceship deserve more words than the planet's principal mode oftransportation? Also, why does that make-believe space ship deserve noless than nine separate pages, including unique entries for six different models of the NCC-1701? Seriously?!

You think Hideo Kojima's cut scenes are long? Try reading Leo Tolstoy's epic tome. War and Peace waspublished in four books over five years, covers nearly a decade ofhistory and includes more than 1,400 pages, more than 560,000 words andmore than 3 million characters. It's generally considered one of thelongest novels - hell, one of the longest things - of all time.

Somehow, though, the writers on Wikipedia managed to summarize thewhole plot in 1,922 words. Well done! Now we'd be really impressed ifyou guys could squeeze the plot of a single damn videogame - even therambling old man that is Metal Gear Solid 4 - into less than 2,548 words.

Yes, Electronic Gaming Monthly - and any videogame publication - is totally worthy of 4,429 words. We just wish that Time and other vital news sources received the same attention.

We love, love, love the soundtracks to Final Fantasy... but someone put way, way, way too much effort into this Wikipedia page. The intro alone is nearly 700 words, lengthier than the entries for many singers, bands and genres. Rock and roll, the biggest genre of them all, doesn't stand a chance.

Of course, the vastness of the web was made to hold such exceedinglyniche minutiae, but even the fan who owns all of these compilationalbums probably agrees that they could have fit onto the page forgeneral Final Fantasy music. Unless that fan is the one who wrote this obsessive love letter to begin with...

Jeffrey Dahmer was a cannibal, Charles Manson was a deranged cultleader and John Wayne Gacy, worst of all, dressed up like a friggin'clown. And that's compared to the list of serial killers by country. Look up the list of serial killers by number of victims andthe difference grows to 6,000. Go ahead and add the two lists togetherif you want - at 8,000 words total, they still fall short of the sheerterror and infamy inspired by Cyber Peacock, Blizzard Buffalo,Overdrive Ostrich and Armored Armadillo. Ooh, we're getting chills justthinking about them!

Civilization Revolution PS3, Xbox 360 PREVIEW [video] in Gaming
Pick a nation, farm your land, dispatch settlers to start new towns, discover science, start wars and knock up the Hanging Gardens of Babylon in Norwich... here the world is your fun-sized cartoon oyster. Winning means perfecting one of a series of disciplines, from building wonders of the world to fostering the rise of great people to science-ing up until you can launch a mission to Alpha Centauri - a goal that in past games was so lofty it would only ever be seen by a minimal elite. For fans of the PC game, Revolution's massive simplification of the game's systems and options, along with its insistence that you go to war with your neighbours (seeing Gandhi issue threats of violence if you don't hand over a newly researched technology is just one treat that awaits) may jar, but for everyone else this is accessible and hideously addictive.

Anaction RPG that promises to be way more action than RPG, Rise of theArgonauts has a winning mythological premise and lots of little designtouches that keep the game looking fresh. Take the Argo—the ship oflegend will act as a seafaring headquarters from which your recruitedArgonauts will provide support. There is also a “deed” system that willincrease Jason’s abilities via the acquisition of Xbox LiveAchievement-like trophies. So it’s bursting with interesting ideas, andit’s all running on the reliable Unreal Engine 3—this could be thesleeper hit of the year.


29. High School Musical 3: Senior Year Dance (PC, Wii, PS2, NDS, X360)

Considerthis your representative sample of licensed games that promise to sellgangbusters regardless of quality or media reaction. And High SchoolMusical 3 is likely to be the biggest game of its breed this year: themovie of the same name is the first time this children’s blockbusterfranchise will see a theatrical release, meaning the marketing for theproperty is likely to be even more inescapable than usual. Beyond theusual niceties of rhythm games—coop and competitive modes, mechanicsspecific to each system’s control scheme—it will have the songs fromHigh School Musical movies past and present. That last one is almostcertainly the only feature the game needs to add another million insales to the franchise’s life-to-date count.

Capabledeveloper Gearbox has never swung for the fences with quite as muchgusto as with Borderlands. The fact that the game is original IP isn’teven the half of it—it also promises a procedural item creation systemthat will provide this sci-fi first-person shooter over half a millionweapons. If that’s not enough, Borderlands also shares some ambitionswith big-budget role playing games: the world will be expansive,character growth and classes comes standard, and missions and sidequests will populate the landscape. Borderlands has all the earmarks ofa breakout hit, and its scope should easily take the breath away fromboth shooter and science fiction fans.

27. Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe (X360, PS3)

Goingon the title alone, Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe feels a decade late,like it should have been slugging it out with Marvel Vs Capcom for thequarters of 90s teenagers. But it’s actually a better idea,commercially, in 2008—now the game can ride the tide of successfulcomic book film blockbusters. It can pull from the years of soliddesign work and franchise reputation rebuilding that culminated inMortal Kombat: Armageddon. And with an anticipated ESRB rating of T forTeen, there’re no retail hurdles to keep the adolescent maledemographic from eating this up with a spoon.

26. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky (PC)

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.:Shadow of Chernobyl was hardly the biggest first-person shooter of 2007in the west. But it posted platinum-level sales in Eastern Europe,where its freeform gameplay and mythos steeped in Russia’s uniquescience fiction struck a strong chord. With little similar competitionin the region, its sequel Clear Sky should do well for itself therealso. Which isn’t to say the rest of the world shouldn’t (or won’t)give it a go as well—Clear Sky will add a tactical, squad-based turfwar to the already eccentric proceedings, and should be just as curiousand interesting a beast as its predecessor.

25. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (PS3, X360, Wii, PS2, PSP, NDS)

TheForce Unleashed could well be the biggest project to bear the Star Warsfranchise name since Episode III ended the franchise’s non-animatedtheatrical run. Every Star Wars fan has been curious about the periodright before the Original Trilogy when Darth Vader had his run of thegalaxy; Force Unleashed promises to capture this period from theperspective of the Dark Side, using exciting new technologies torealistically render bot the AI and the Force itself. If the persistentrumors are true, this could well be the last project completely builtby LucasArts’ internal studio—but in that case, it will be one heck ofa send-off that a lot of Star Wars fans will experience.


24. Beyond Good and Evil 2 (PS3, X360)

Allthat’s known about Beyond Good and Evil 2 is that it’s currently beingworked on by Ubisoft premier designer Michel Ancel. But in this case,that’s more than enough—Ancel’s resume does include perennial hitRayman and (naturally) the first Beyond Good and Evil, after all. Andthe first Beyond Good and Evil is particularly beloved. The smallaudience that played it has been talking about it ever since, praisingits varied gameplay and realistic, strong female protagonist Jade. Sothe sequel is exciting, and though its commercial success is by nomeans assured it’s possible that maybe the adult gaming audience isfinally ready for this franchise.


23. Lock’s Quest (NDS)

2007’sbiggest surprise sales blockbuster was a little DS game called Drawn toLife, built by a little mobile developer called 5th Cell. That gamegave the independent studio a reputation for creating innovations withstrong market appeal, and it could cement that reputation with Lock’sQuest, a curious RTS/Action/RPG/minigame hybrid with cute graphics,quick thrills and a world that can be completely remodeled by theplayer. In other words, it has a lot of elements that appeal across awide variety of gaming demographics, as well as a lot of ambition. Ifthis one lives up to its potential, it would be great to see it succeed.


22. Puzzle Quest: Galactrix (PC, X360, NDS)
Publisher: D3 Publisher of America
Developer: Infinite Interactive
Est. Release Date: Fall 2008
Officially Announced for E3: Yes

Lastyear’s Puzzle Quest combined the most addictive parts of the casual“match three” puzzle game with the most addictive parts of RPGcharacter development, a powerful cocktail that murdered productivityand sold in huge numbers. There’s no reason this follow-up shouldn’tcontinue in that trend—it’s still a match three puzzle game (this timemore Collapse than Bejeweled), it still has those all-important RPGelements, and it’s being built by the same studio. The only differences(besides the science fiction setting) all look like improvements.There’s an element of strategy gaming. Players can enhance not justtheir character, but also their spacecraft. Downloadable content willabound. It all sounds like a game that players will itch to play afterthe first hit.


21. Crysis: Warhead (PC)

Allegedlythe last PC exclusive from the bastion of PC gaming high technology,Crytek’s side story to 2007’s Crysis looks every bit as graphicallydazzling as its predecessor. It also promises to be a moremarket-friendly title (a tall order considering Crysis’ million-sellingstatus); Warhead provides a less strategic, more bombastic run-and-gunaffair compared to the original Crysis. And with a year of hardwareadvancements in between Crysis and Crysis: Warhead, that more widelyappealing design will find that a lot more people have the rigs toactually run it well. And who knows? If Warhead does manage to findthat perfect balance, perhaps Crytek will stick to their PC-exclusivestomping grounds for a while longer.

20. Tomb Raider Underworld (Wii, PS2, PS3, X360, PC, NDS)

It’sbeen a few years since Crystal Dynamics took the Tomb Raider franchiseand reinvigorated it with Legend. But it’s really with Underworld thatthe series’ previous mistakes have been taken to heart. Rather thanrest the game on its laurels again, Underworld is a creation that lookstoward with the new; the game engine is all new, the way the worldinteracts with Lara is more realistic, combat now has melee and willflow fluidly into the puzzle mechanics. And if that wasn’t enough toguarantee sales, Lara has a motorcycle now too.


19. Sonic Unleashed (Wii, PS2, PS3, X360)

Thesedays it feels like SEGA promises the moon with every Sonic title, tothe point where it’s hard to fall for it anymore. Take Sonic Unleashed;it’s promise of a revamped, re-invented Sonic echoes the promises SEGAmade before this generation’s first Sonic the Hedgehog hit the Xbox 360with a sad plop. And yet, franchise sales have never followed the samecurve as the blue blur’s review scores. This is mostly because ofSonic’s strong appeal to the child market, but on some level thegraying Genesis owner wants to believe what we’re told, that this nextSonic really will reclaim the glory days. Anyway, Sonic Unleashed. It’srunning on a new engine and has some 2D environments. It’ll sell, andas for the rest of it? Here’s hoping.

PlatinumGames, formerly Seeds, formerly Clover Studios, isn’t known for makingcommercial hits. No, that team is known more for making instant,beloved classics. Okami certainly, but Viewtiful Joe is in there aswell, and the only people who remember God Hand these days love it toabsolute death. The game has a completely innovative, yet highly marketfriendly hook in its “four survivors must cooperate to survive thezombie horde” premise, though players of a less polite persuasion canalso take up the role of a super-powered zombie. This could very wellbe the next major online phenomenon, like Team Fortress 2 before it.


15. Resistance 2 (PS3)

Thefirst Resistance was the big win for the PlayStation 3 at launch, butResistance 2 looks set to spin that good first impression into anempire. That’s fantastic scale for an online console game; add onsome more focused, objective-oriented teamplay and Resistance 2 is agood contender for gamer’s next networked obsession.

Threeyears on and Killzone 2 is still trying to shake off its disastrous“showing” at E3 2005. But it still needs a big floor to show off, and it needs aman to say “in-game graphics” about one thousand times in front of somehuge HD Killzone if it wants to really nail the market. E3 historicallyhas had some very big floors.

Alot on Fable 2 is already known, and most of it is interesting on avariety of levels. Then there’s the gay marriage, pregnant adventuring, and allmanner of family matters to deal with in the game as well. It’s a gamethat promises to push boundaries and break some of the medium’s moreridiculous unnecessary taboos. Considering the success of the originalGable, it’s likely many people will choose to experience this moveforward—surely a good thing.

Plenty of new gameplayelements will make themselves known as the player crosses that expanse:some wounds have to be treated with field medicine (ie. fishing abullet out with a knife) and brush fires can be started, only to bewhipped up realistically by wind. Far Cry 2 is an underutilized brandmoving to an underutilized setting while adding multiple newinnovations, making it an extremely strong contender in the hardcoreshooter market.

Princeof Persia: The Sands of Time was one of the last generation’s definingmoments, so it would have been easy for Ubisoft to just build astandard sequel on the successes of its previous trilogy. The fact thatthis is not the case, that the series is instead being rebooted with anincredible hand-painted aesthetic and open world, show a strongdedication to making the Prince one of the most lasting and importantfranchises in gaming (though the big budget movie helps on that scoreas well). While previous PoP titles did sell well, after theblockbuster success of Assassin’s Creed, the timing is perfect for thePrince to really make it big.


9. Final Fantasy XIII (PS3)

Sinceclosing the door on the last console genre, Square Enix has relied onhandheld games and Wii side stories alone. It’s not surprising that Final Fantasy XIII will show up in someform at E3—and regardless of what form it takes or what the game lookslike now, it could certainly steal the show if it tried.

Atworst, this is a surprise come back of one of gaming’s most iconicfranchises. Perhaps the best sign that this game knows what it will taketo succeed is its reverence to Street Fighter II—all of the charactersfrom that game will return, and the gameplay mirrors the measured paceof that early entry. Considering versions of SFII still sell in strongnumbers, it’s easy to see how this strategy could succeed on the market.

Sticking to its “platform” guns, the game will befully backwards compatible—with old DLC, with old instruments, theworks. And while user-created content is not a go this time, there arecertainly things about the game yet to be announced—you don’t want tomiss this one at the show.

50 Skills that Every Gamer Should Master in Gaming
Just being able to play games is only the beginning. If you're goingto call yourself a proper gamer (as opposed to a casual pretender)there are a few requisite skills that you must master first. 50 skills,in fact. And they're all right here...
1. Give a game a review score without ever actually playing the game

We all abide by the 'one more go' mantra. It demands that we are strong in the face of severe sleep deprivation.

Or, master the art of gripping. Even newborn babies can do it.

European, Indian Markets to Get New PS2 in Business and Industry in Gaming, Media, Web, IT and Computing
Sony Computer Entertainment will be launching a redesigned PS2 inEuropean and Indian markets by late October, according to a new report.

Like the PS2 released in Japan in November 2007, the new model will feature an integrated power supply, according to the Economic Times.

Theupdated system will hit European and Indian markets before Diwali, anannual Indian and Nepalese festival this year taking place on October28, said SCE India manager Atindriya Bose.

As well asfeaturing an in-built AC adapter, the new model will be slimmer andsupposedly lighter due to the design overhaul. It will be priced at6,990 Indian Rupees ($162/€102), the same as the current model.

“Wefeel PS2 has the potential to penetrate further into the Indian andRussian markets,” said Bose. “Console gaming is in its nascent stage inIndia. These are untapped markets and are new to the gaming world,hence we have no plans to phase out PS2 anytime soon."


SCE India will also be launching the PlayStation Network for PS3 in India by the end of the current fiscal year.

Revealed: Sony's future plans for PS3, PSP and TV in Business and Industry in Gaming, Media, Web, IT and Computing
"This is not your father's Sony", sums up what Howard Stringer has done at Sony since taking over the reins in 2005.
TheWales-born CEO was underlining the challenge that the company now facesin the digital age, as he led the Japanese giant's corporate strategybriefing in Tokyo today.
In the absence of any attention-grabbingnew hardware announcements, most headlines are likely to go to Sony'spledge to increase revenues in the PC, Blu-ray-related and componentsbusinesses.
Game plan
Stringer said thatSony would build these into "trillion-yen businesses" by FY2010,putting them alongside the core business units of TVs, digital imaging,gaming and mobile phones. One trillion yen is currently worth around£4.7 billion.
Although gaming is a traditional Sony strength, thedivision is mired in red ink after the costly development and launch ofthe PlayStation 3. Addressing that, the CEO promised to bring it toprofit by March next year.
Stringer also outlined plans to investclose to £9 billion in new technology in a concerted drive to becomethe world leader in LCD televisions within three years. Beyond that,the assembled execs wouldn't be drawn on precise numbers or revenuetargets.
Mobile content
Although he didn't address recent speculation about the possibility of a PSP phone or the stability of the Sony Ericsson joint venturethat produces mobile phones, Stringer did emphasise that such handsetswould continue to be sold and that "Sony music and pictures content[would be] embedded in all key Sony Ericsson product lines."
As expected, there was no discussion on life after Blu-ray– the so-called 'death of disk'. However, a hint of how quickly onlinedistribution will move centre-stage came in the news that SonyPictures' summer blockbuster, Hancock, will be made available exclusively to all internet-connect Bravia televisions in the US before its DVD release.

The movie theme resurfaced in a presentation from Kaz Hirai, the president of Sony Computer Entertainment, with the news that the long-anticipated film download service would finally reach the online PlayStation Network this year.
Hiraiconfirmed that US users would get first crack at PS3 movie downloads inlate summer, with Europe and Japan to follow by year's end. He addedthat full details would be announced at E3 in LA next month and thatboth standard- and high-definition titles would be available.
       
Virtual world
Warmingto the theme, Hirai added, "Please expect more from our evolvingPlayStation business." That evolution will also include themuch-delayed PlayStation Home virtual world, which Hirai demonstrated,along with new dynamic in-game advertisements that change according tothe context.
The littlest PlayStation also featured prominently,with the PSP being positioned as an interactive extension of the PS3console, as well as a tool for accessing the PlayStation Store for gamedownloads and, possibly, feature films at some undisclosed point.
Hirai's presentation concluded with something of a surprise in a new network service called Life With PlayStation.The rough demo showed a view of the Earth from space, which rotated toreveal location-related news items, reminiscent of similar services onNintendo's Wii.
Innovator and creator
Returningto the podium to sum up, Stringer emphasised his firm's creative skillsand took aim at a company many see as having inherited the Sony mantleas innovator supreme.
"We have products to get excited about [including] OLED TVs, Rolly, CyberShot smile detection and the new Bravias.
"Appleis a boutique company, but we're a large conglomerate. We recently cameout number one in a poll by Incite on innovative companies, just aheadof Apple. I rest my case."
Whether or not that's overstating thecase, Stringer's confidence in the once-troubled company is almosttangible, leaving little room for doubt that Sony is back and that itmeans business.

DEBATE: Xbox 360 gamers read books more than PS3 owners in The Great Debates!
A new Experian Consumer Research survey comparing Xbox 360 and PS3owners has thrown up some wonderfully frank and comedic results.
Apparently, Xbox 360 users are far more likely to say that they are unable to live without books than their PS3 counterparts.
Butthe PS3 contingent hit back hard on the newspaper front, with way morerespondents (well, 103 compared to 60) saying that they would be deadif they didn't have newspapers.
The age of console owners is alsointeresting… with more in the 18-24 age bracket loving their Wiis, butwith those at 44-years old being far more likely to own a PS3… almosttwice as likely in fact.
It gets better
Ifyou think that's funny, read on. In a frankly pointless psychometricstatement test, the PS3 and Xbox 360 owners agree that "real men don'tcry", although the Microsoft-ers state that they are "more interestedin nature".
But while the Xbox 360 folk are reading their gamingmagazines, PS3 are buzzing around go-kart tracks the nation over orplaying board games.
The only question is…why on earth are people asking these questions?

This year's darkest shooter? in Gaming
You can use the darkness of shadows toachieve a spooky ambience, but go too far and you get a blind man, likethese shots of FPS, Legendary.
The game features a "mix of real-worldlocations like New York and London, mythical beasties and your typicalFPS run 'n' gun gameplay", and you can read more about that in PSW's preview.

Although quite dark, it's actually not looking too bad. Let's just hopeit's better than Turning Point: fall of Liberty - developer SparkUnlimited's previous creation.

Atari has been reasonablyquiet on this one though, despite it being pencilled in for a summerrelease (on PS3, PC and 360). Not a good sign...

New PlayStation controller for E3 - 'break apart' motion pad in Gaming
Sony ComputerEntertainment is readying a Wii-Remote style motion-controlledcontroller are gaining ground, with the latest reports claiming thatSony’s new controller will break apart into two separate units.
GamesIndustry.bizreports that each of the two separate parts of the new PlayStationcontroller is set to contain an accelerometer providing 'Wiimote-like'motion-sensing functionality.
E3 unveiling likely
It’slooking likely that Sony will unveil the new motion-control PlayStationcontroller at E3 in Santa Monica in July, so until then all we canexpect is ‘no comments’ on rumour and speculation from SCEE’sever-diligent PR people.

No future for PC-exclusive games, says Nvidia in Business and Industry in Gaming, Media, Web, IT and Computing
Nvidia's VP of content business development, Roy Taylor, has said hebelieves the value of consoles means "no-one is going to makePC-exclusive games in the future".
Speaking exclusively to Eurogamer,he said he wasn't threatened by the machines from Sony, Microsoft andNintendo; instead he sees an "exciting future" of co-existence.
"I think we have to face the facts - the value of consoles issuch that no-one is going to make a PC-exclusive game in the future.Why would they? Why would they ignore consoles?" said Taylor.
                   
"That said, PC gaming is changing - and consoles don'tthreaten PC gaming. They're just different. Adapting to that andunderstanding that is what I think is really, really important.
"Most PC gamers also own consoles - not all of them, but a lot of them.What we're seeing happen is that, yes, people are developing for Xbox360, for PS3 - but they're also developing for PC," he added.
The reason Taylor is excited is that PC versions of games,which he says are generally "better", use console code as a baseline,and the better the baseline then the better the desktop conversion.
"The console is now a baseline. If you look at Gears of War orAssassin's Creed, they came out on console and they were greatexperiences - but the PC versions had additional aspects to them thatalso made them attractive, whether you owned the console version ornot," continued Taylor.
"The PC version was better. That's something that people needto get their heads around - the console is a baseline, the PC is goingto be an improved version. That's an exciting future, and that's why Idon't see anything threatening about console at all.

Your Video Games Are Dropping in Price in Business and Industry in Gaming, Media, Web, IT and Computing
Just like new cars drop in price when you drive them off the lot,the resale prices of video games drop in price the day you buy them. Infact the resale price of video games released in 2007 dropped 0.24% perday. But do well reviewed games drop as much as poorly reviewed ones?We set off to find out.

For our analysis we looked at every gamereleased in 2007 for Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and Wii. A total of 322games. We then gathered resale price data from VGPC.com and review scores from metacritic.comfor each game. We then charted the review score vs the price change perday for every game to see if there is a trend (Every trendline showbelow is statistically significant with 99% confidence. See discussion below for more details). The chart below shows all the data points:

Thereis an obvious trend with the lower the review score the bigger theprice drop per day. Based upon the data, a game with a review score of90 points would be predicted to drop in price 0.19% per day, while agame with a 50 review score would drop 0.24% per day. This might notseem like a huge difference but after a year the great game would sellfor $16.70 and the bad game would sell for $7.38. The same basic trendholds true for each console too:

PS3 gameshad an average review score of 61.6 and dropped in price 0.24% per dayalso. A Playstation 3 game with a 90 metacritic score drops 0.18%/Dayand a 50 reviewed game drops 0.27%/Day. The PS3 is statistically thesame as the 360 in terms of the price drop per day, which makes sensebecause many games on the 360 are also available on the Playstation 3.

The average Wii gamehad a review score of 45.7 and dropped in price 0.22% per day. A Wiigame with a 90 metacritic score drops 0.16%/Day and a 50 reviewed gamedrops 0.22%/Day. The average Wii review score is below 50 so companiesare making quite a few bad games for the Wii. But at the same time theWii has the lowest percentage drop per day. Maybe all those casualgamers keep the resale prices up.

Why does this matter to theaverage gamer though? The video games you buy are a depreciating asset.If you are the sort who trades your games in to buy new ones or sellsthem online after you beat them, be sure you don't procrastinateselling your games.

Now developers and publishers take notetoo. If you make a game with a good review score it will sell at ahigher price for longer. We only analyzed resale prices but it makessense that the bigger the difference is between used prices and newprices, the more people are going to buy the used game. You will haveto keep lowering prices to sell the game. Another good reason to STOPMAKING BAD GAMES.

Nerd Discussion Below. Warning!Here is some more info for math/stats people out there who want to knowall the details about the regression. For the complete dataset (the topchart) the r-squared is 0.0539, so only about 5.4% of the pricevariation is predicted by the review score. The trend is statisticallysignificant though with a p-value of 0.000025, way below the .01 neededfor a 99% confidence level. Here are the other r-squared and p-valuenumbers:


Withthis type of data we wouldn't expect one variable to predict a verylarge portion of the price changes so we think 5.4% is pretty good. Inthe future we would like to run an analysis with more variables inhopes of improving the r-squared. We are considering using thesevariables in future analysis:

  • Days since released - price drops usually slow down the longer a game has been available
  • Publisher - certain publishers like Atlus tend to publish games that keep their value
  • Serial game or not - games that come out every year like sports titles drop in price faster
  • Is it the last year of the console's life - games released in the last year of a console's support tend to become rare and don't drop in price
Hopefullywith more variables we can increase the r-squared and be able topredict the changes in resale prices with more accuracy.

Saint's Row 2 'Pompous' To Attack GTA IV in Gaming
As part of a new analyst note, Janco Partners' Mike Hickey has referenced the latest Grand Theft Auto IV-satirizing trailer for THQ's Saint's Row 2, suggesting the move is "unusually pompous" and reiterating "conservative" sales expectations for THQ's urban open-world title.

Commenting within an entertainment business round-up sent out to clients and selective press, Hickey noted specifically:

"A new Saint’s Row 2 trailer can be found through the following hyperlink - http://www.thq-games.com/uk/thqtv/index/1516.

The trailer directly attacks Grand Theft Auto IV in game content, an unusually pompous position in our view, considering GTA IVis estimated to be the highest grossing 1st week entertainment releaseof all time - and is currently the highest quality scored game on boththe Xbox 360 and PS3 according to Metacritic.com.

We remain conservative on our sales expectations for Saint’s Row 2, in light of mediocre game previews and a delayed release in-part from quality concerns."

The game's delay, originally announced on May 29th, meant that Saint's Row 2, developed by original series creators Volition and due to debut on August 26th, will be released on October 14th in the U.S.

Saint's Row 2 is a key franchise title for THQ, which recently 'realigned'following a loss in fiscal 2008, and is concentrating on a mix oforiginal IP and licensed family titles "to take advantage of theexpanding demographic on the growing installed base of new gamingsystems."

Saint's Row 2 trailer is "pompous", says analyst in Business and Industry in Gaming, Media, Web, IT and Computing
Mike Hickey, analyst at Janco Partners, has criticised a trailer for THQ's forthcoming action sequel Saint's Row 2 as "pompous" for satirising the content in rival game Grand Theft Auto IV.

"The trailer directly attacks Grand Theft Auto IV in game content, an unusually pompous position in our view, considering GTA IV is estimated to be the highest grossing first week entertainment release of all time - and is currently the highest quality scored game on both the Xbox 360 and PS3 according to Metacritic.com," he said in a note, according to Gamasutra.

He added that reaction in the build-up to the game's release so far hadn't been encouraging: "We remain conservative on our sales expectations for Saint's Row 2, in light of mediocre game previews and a delayed release in-part from quality concerns."

The original Saint's Row was relatively successful for THQ, partly down to being the first open-ended real-world action title published on the next-generation consoles.

However, the sequel will undoubtedly have to suffer comparisons with Rockstar's behemoth when it's released at the later-than-expected date of October this year.

Are Women gamers just as competitive as men? in The Great Debates!
Oberon Media's new COO, Don Ryan, believes that there is little difference between male and female gamers.
"Myexperience at MSN and Xbox Live is that women are as competitive if notmore competitive than men, except that they just don't want to spend orhave the time or learn 'up-down-X-X-Y-Y'...They don't want to deal withthat," he told GamesIndustry.biz.
"You give them one button, they'll kick your butt."
Ryanalso recognises that although the current generation of consoles aren'tnecessarily considered as casual devices, that could changesignificantly over time - so that while the USD 300-500 price points ofthe Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 can compare with the PlayStation 2 whenit launched, Sony's older console has a much bigger casual appeal today.
                   
"Iagree with your general premise in that, if I'm a single mom thatreally likes puzzle games, I'm not necessarily going to go and buy aPlayStation 3 to come home and download Bejeweled," he said.
"Whenwe designed Xbox Live Arcade...That's the reason it had a retro-arcadetilt to it. We knew that we had to have the rabid owner of the boxcompletely engaged. So, you know, Geometry Wars and the rest of it.
Then, what happens, underneath it you have this nice foundation of Hexic, Bejeweled and Astro Pop."
Ryanknew that the users of the Xbox 360, and those who paid for content andservices, were often different people - giving Microsoft the potentialto reach both.
"What we tried to do was, again, segment intothese two core audiences, with some content bridging - puzzle gamesalways bridge, especially action puzzle games - and link them to thecommunity."
"And what ended up happening is exactly what wethought. 'Hey, I'm familiar with that. I know how to play that! Get outof my way. Oh, I beat you!. And then the competition kicks in..."
To date, Oberon's titles haven't yet appeared on the PlayStation Network or WiiWare - but that could change in the near future.
"Ultimately,what we're going to try to concentrate on are a few set of coreplatforms, then we'll partner with people for expanding thedistribution of our intellectual property across other platforms," hesaid.
"Just like any publisher who is focused, we are going toidentify potential franchise extensions and find people who are just asexcited about our IP for those devices."
So, while the companydoesn't have any plans to internally build WiiWare games, for example,that doesn't mean they won't talk to other parties about exploitingtheir IP on other platforms.
"Ultimately, what you are going tosee is the PS3, the Xbox 360...as the price curves comes down, you aregoing to see more and more casual content."

Gran Turismo vs. Forza Motorsport : Comparison in Gaming
“Both have cars, both have racing, so what’s the difference?”

That’s our job to tell you. For people unaware about these racing series, you should know they are probably the best racing simulations in account for realism. Gran Turismo is the PlayStation exclusive series and Forza Motorsport is the Xbox loyalist. They are not NFS-ish titles giving a laid-back and blissful driving. Gran Turismo is a completely settled franchise now whereas Forza Motorsport is a brand new series having only two titles till date.


Gran Turismo (from Polyphony Digital), the first “top PSX seller” title was out in fall of 1997 and was recognized not only for the extensively realistic driving simulation, physics based car realism and sound from real life cars but also for the maximum PlayStation power it was utilizing to give at-the-time state of the art graphics. And till date it has evolved into numerous titles just beside the “full” games which would feature some gameplay depicting only concepts of what they were building in their future releases.


Prior to GT 4, GT 4: Prologue was released, which was regarded as a teaser for the game. This helped them realize what people would expect from GT 4 and yet despite it was unexpected the GT 4 was then released with a vast number of  around 700 cars and 50+ race tracks. Therefore all the GTs have huge number of licensed vehicles to keep you immersed in the game and whatever you think GT is like, you will not get bored of the content each (full) version of the game will offer.


And finally the game has stepped into the next generation console PS3 having scintillating graphics that you could easily mistake for a real footage if somehow you were browsing through your TV channels and one of them was showing the game footage (I kept looking for GamerTV but was irritated to see this game’s video wondering why in the world GamerTV is not coming on its time, only to be in awe few seconds later). The “full” next gen version of GT which is Gran Turismo 5: Prologue.is not released but its teaser is ready for people to get their hands on.


Forza Motorsport, GT’s now one of the main adversaries developed by Turn 10 came out on Xbox in May 2005, featuring around 231 cars at your disposal to race around real life circuits. The most esteemed feature in Forza was its physics engine and how it would vary the car’s performance impromptu of effects like damage or collision (which also we will discuss is dazzling) during The Race. So Forza was known for its realistic damage and collisions from the perspective of a professional driver or a casual racing gamer.



Like I said, in contrast to GT, Forza would vary three main features of the car you browse for in games (Top Speed, Acceleration and Handling) according to how much we have smashed our car during a race. Realism! It spawned a sequel in mid-2007 on next gen Xbox 360 also which was successful with nothing immense to show off but still having the Forza-essence which is good.


It will be too thorough to discuss series by series so here we will take a contrasting (or not) look at the latest next gen iterations of the series, Gran Turismo 5: Prologue and Forza Motorsport 2.


PRESENTATION


Since GT 5 Pro is only a demo there is less course selection but still has a huge amount of cars, which might get problematic as its fun to change the area you are driving in more than the car you are driving. But the game is still fully fledged and can easily be stripped of its ‘demo’ tag. The characteristics of a car are a striking feature.


Every car is different, every! You will want to remember each and every detail & spec about cars and even when you have the best cars you will feel like giving your old one a try just because it had something unique (which every car does). The new and improved dashboard look is praiseworthy. It’s not a stationary picture in any sense, completely different dashboards for all cars which are exceptionally accurate and in motion.


So we will see everything different in dashboards when we go from all included Ferraris and Ford GTs to Skylines and Mustangs. The course selection is limited but a very good compilation so unless you feel like having more you won’t be disappointed with what you have got. The new interface is now having the first time introduced “My Page” just like having a profile page from where you will be able to do whatever you want do in the game.


The GUI is completely HD rendered and it’s an exquisite display all the way. This game is the first one to go online with plenty of race combos to compete in.



Coming to Forza 2, the feature in the limelight comes to be the any level combination you can get of cars, motors, parts and race tracks. You feel like doing “something” and you do the very exact “something”. The developers worked 24 hours as this is easily evident.


There are 12 different environments with 40+ racetracks which tend to get confessedly repetitive but not perhaps for a racing maniac. The list includes famous race tracks like Silver Stone or Laguna and what’s more, it also has fantasy tracks for the satisfying driving thrill of cars whose cost ranges in 100 thousands of dollars.


The interface is beautiful, bright and trouble-free to go through with plenty of options in racing. You can go online for an incredible number of options like car trading, car gifting and Microsoft sponsored tournaments. Oh yes, also free racing with opponents!


Winner: Forza Motorsport 2


CONTROLS


In Gran Turismo 5: Prologue, the physics and mechanics are state of the art. The car would drive as real as it would in real life. It would over steer-under steer exactly according how pathetically you drive and wherever the engine is placed in the car. As I said each car is distinctive. The characteristics of each car are clearly noticeable even if they are similar in internal design. It is all dynamics and the way you drive.


The AI in past GT games was average. There was nothing significant about it but in GT 5 Pro it is slightly improved. Occasionally you will see other drivers making mistakes which might cost us too. They will try their best to win and stay smooth on the road. Nothing outstanding about it but still improvement is improvement.



Forza Motorsport 2 is on the perfect spot on the line between realism and arcade-enjoyment in car racing. In controls, it is more or less like GT, which is to say it’s just about completely realistic. Real tests on car drivers were done where some racer drove on a real track and then in the game with the same car and track to see how closely the record results matched.


The game features the driving assistance line just like in NFS ProStreet which would show you the best line for driving around curves including when to slow down and when to pick up the pace or rush. The AI is average.


Occasionally someone would swipe ahead from your side giving you a nudge (which leads your car exasperatingly off course) but during parallel driving they tend to back off showing cowardice. So the race is won slowly. But this game is surely not for the impatient types. One thing to note is that the upgrades in the cars makes things easier but don’t turn out to be table turning and if you drive smooth and perfect you will win any race with the stock car.


Finally to say, in both games you cannot say “Step on it!!” because you don’t have to “step on it”, otherwise it’s just bye-bye early from race for you. It’s all about feathering the accelerator and brakes with ‘love and affection’ around the ‘mean’ turns to stay ahead and win the race. If you prefer to be in speed throughout all the game buy an NFS.


Winner: Forza Motorsport 2 with a very low margin.


GRAPHICS


If I don’t talk about graphics this article would not probably be about gaming! GT 5: Prologue is easily the king of graphics. As mentioned before, it’s easy to mistake it for real footage when you run it at 1080p. It supports all kinds of modes 1080p/i, 720p whatever you have in your TV and the game rocks the PS3 potential.


You can go through the trailers online and see the stunning amount of detail in the game which may actually drive you off course a lot. The lighting is astounding. The unique dashboard in every car would show a lot detailed lighting effects as the car changes angles according to the sun or goes through a tunnel or a shadowed area whatever. Its graphics are closest to realism without a doubt.



Forza Motorsport 2 is however on the other hand, not up to the mark. It is clearly not sucking the Xbox 360 potential and aliasing and jagged lines are all over the screen. Modes supported are 720p and 1080i. The graphics section is clearly a turn down feature about the game otherwise probably making it best of the best.


The real time damage done to the cars is however paid attention to and the details are overwhelming. GT 5: Prologue also has similarly brilliant damage effects.


Winner: Gran Turismo 5: Prologue without a doubt.


SOUND


This genre of game or racing is not about the sound really but still GT 5 has state of the art engine sounds which are totally from real life cars and a decent soundtrack. There are no complaints about it. Forza Motorsport 2 has varying engine sounds, though it’s all only what you can expect from a racing game. The ambient noises can get irksome in Forza.


Winner: Gran Turismo 5: Prologue


OVERALL



Sorry to disappoint you all but there is no “Overall”. GT5: Prologue may be a decision for an average gamer but a must buy for GT fans and Forza 2 is a must buy for arcade driving lovers still looking for realism but a decision for someone who wants high-tech graphics. We were never supposed to conclude which game is better. Both are fantastic titles of the gaming industry and a must play for all avid racing gamers.


Stuff like state of the art graphics in GT5: Prologue and extravagant amount of detail in Forza Motorsport 2 (like even getting discounts from car companies) put both these games on the success list. Buy the game (if you haven’t already) for whichever console you own or get both if you have both X360 and PS3.
