Contrary to popular belief, not all hackers are pale kids who hole up in their parents' basements, listen to techno, and practice identity theft to pay off their energy-drink addictions. For some, the reason for manipulating computers and electronics echoes the words of George Mallory--"Because it is there."
When Microsoft's Xbox 360 hit retailers last November, it quickly became the hacking community's Mount Everest. And according to a report by The Wall Street Journal, it wasn't just because the machine was the newest, shiniest, coolest gadget of the 2005 holiday season.
"It's about overcoming the challenge Microsoft has set out there," Andrew "Bunnie" Huang told WSJ. Microsoft certainly touted the security of its machine during its development, claiming it would be nearly impossible to crack. "[Microsoft has] bragged about the security for the Xbox 360, so now it's like: Well, let's see," Huang said.
Huang was the first to crack the original Xbox back in 2001. Since then, an entire Xbox modding subculture has sprung up, with numerous developers creating dashboards and alternate, often Linux-based, operating systems for the console. Ads offering to physically mod Xboxes are a common sight on Internet classifieds sites like Craigslist.org, with hardware-heads often willing to swap out hard drives and flash BIOSes for a small fee.
While regular Xbox modding has become a cottage industry of sorts, no one has completely solved the Xbox 360 yet. Some progress has been made, though, and Huang thinks it's only a matter of time. "Things are different from a few years ago. The stakes are higher for Microsoft and the hacking community has intensified its efforts."
The XBox 360 will certainly be cracked by someone - probably those same guys. I heard that they linked up loads of computers in a room to generate massive processing power to do it.
The Xbox 360 has already been cracked, there's a little device that can help you do it that I sell on my website, although it has other purposes as well.

Although very difficult to do if your not computer savvy
The firmware change on the dvd rom drive would would be picked up on xboxlive servers, but its in its early days.
So this is like a Mod that can play Multi Reigon DVDs etc; I know one of the main reasons people Mod Xbox 360's is for illegal/pirated games, what other benifits are there from Modding an Xbox 800?
Its not a Mod,but enables your 360 hardware ie:DVD Rom and SATA Hard Drive to be to be accessed through linux or windows,(alot more complicated than that)also its extremely difficullt burn the discs, have to be dual layer.
Also there are some console websites doing it for £60,and from what Ive heard on the grapevine,as you know Microsoft have issued a big update on live servers today, and there's loads of peeps on live with the firmware hack and they've not been banned. But it wont be long before microsoft plug it.
If you disabled the chip on the old xbox, obviously you can play on Live. Yeh, I remember now, its all based around Linux. On the Old Xbox you could install games on a harddrive, I guess its the same with the 360
Yes you can disable the xbox modchip to play on live,so Microsoft cant detect your modchip but if you got dashes and othe linux based software on your upgraded harddrive, you have to be careful in partition you have the unsigned code as microsoft can scan the c:partition and e: on your harddrive.
The 360 is different there's no modchip its a firmware hack purely firmware based, there's no disable ability,Xboxlive servers just cant detect it yet,if the rumours are true.
