Currently of all three next-generation home consoles, Nintendo Wii is the only one that does not support voice chat of some kind in its online games. And, no, that’s not because it’s a “new-generation†system instead of a “next-generation†one. It’s both, silly.
According to IGN Wii editor-in-chief Matt Casamassina, who recently updated his blog on the subject of today’s confirmation of 4-player Super Smash Bros. Brawl online play, an impressive 98.1% of the 10,706 IGN readers who voted in a poll asking “Do you want a headset and voice chat for Wii's online games?†voted yes, they do want voice chat and a Wii headset. Meanwhile, a rather sad 1.8% of the polled readers don’t want voice chat. That’s 10,508 vs. 198. The poll was included in an editorial written by Casamassina last week titled “Let There be Voice,†in which he called out the Big N on the fact that it is ignoring the option for voice chat its online games.

Granted, reader polls are not perfectly accurate, and just one does not fairly represent the entirety of all Wii owners. But we found the statistic entertaining.
