This week, my and my friends had a really, really long lan party, and as always you get bored of what you play after a while.
So we thought, we just try out every BF2 mod that is out there.
And as there are propably alot people not willing to download all the huge files, I decided to create a small overview over the currently released mods. As I don't have Special Forces, none of the tested mods requires it.
So without any sort, here's the first:

US Intervention http://usi.jarhedz.com/

This mod is based in the time of the first Gulf war, giving the US Forces weaponsystems such as the deadly AH64 Apache or the feared A10 warthog, Ahbrams M1A1 and a Hummer with Avenger anti Air missles mounted.

The Iraqis counter this threat with T72 MBTs, BRDM 1 in several modifikations, aswell as the massive Gunship Mi24 Hind, which is even a larger threat as it can carry up to 5 troopers to any desired direction while providing heavy fire support. As a counter to the A10 the Iraqis use the Su25A Frogfoot.

So far so good, not very special you may think.
But the mod team has given the engine a lookthrough, MBTs can switch between Sabot, HEAT and smoke shells, even more important the Tanks have weak points on their armour.
The AT rockets fired by the AH64 and the Hind are no longer controlled by the gunner, but instead lock themselfs on tanks, and after they have locked and armed themself (takes a few seconds, meanwhile the Chopper has to keep aiming at the tank), the Rocket hits its target with devastating Accuracy and Impact.
A10 and Su25 now have a system (I don't know if its radar?), that show's active enemy tanks as triangulars on the pilots screen when coming into a certain range.
Nicely done here: Friendly armour is beeing marked by an X instead, reducing teambombing.
(also for the gunships)

Not forgotten shall be the infantery weapons.
The small arms are basicly the same as in BF2, but the accuracy has been improved, they recieved new sounds (which kick ass, love the AK!) and some minor Kit changes have been made.
The US forces recieved the SMAW AT rocket, the iraqis the RPG7 Anti tank grenade launcher.
The pioneer class now carries AA rockets, with moderate power, so the balance is quite fine.)
All weapons feel very realistic, Infantery combats feel like CoD2 should have felt.

The mod features 8 new maps, all well designed, intense battle guaranteed.
(Current release: Full Client 0.1, hotfix 0.11, totaly around 800 MB, no bot support)

Mercenaries www.dies-world.com

This mod is about a fictional conflict between terrorists and Mercenaries, with the mercenaries using many diffrent weapons, such as the F2000 and the P90.
The small arms accuracy has been greatly improved, also the Magazine capability of many weapons has been increased, yet is unrealistic (m249 has 300 rounds/mag). Also every infantery man carries 12 throwing knifes...the bots owned me so hard with them, at 4 in the night...

However you will still love the weapons, since this mod is the first to come with a full coop support, featuring more coop maps than any before. And I can't tell how pleased I was to have 300 rounds instead of 200 when I ran into 15 bots...
This mod is definatly one of the best for intense infantery combats, I personally don't like the vehicles in it too much. The APCs, such as the LAV25 and the BTR 90 are way too strong compared to the MBT's, they take several side hits from the Ahbrams main gun and such...

Also on the maps where flying should be fun, there are way too many tunguskas, on one there is a tunguska per Merc helicopter, making it both feeling unrealistic to play and ruining all the fun on flying.
Yet as this mod concentrates on the infantery action, thus features many intense Infantery only maps (Like a fight in a huge warehouse, one about the Ho Chi Minh trail, one in a deep valley...)
it is alot fun, escpecially on lan parties, where you can have the best squad action.

Also, for all you pilots, this mod features a Coral sea like Air battle, with full bot support!
(Current release: 8.0, 4 mappacks available. Mod size 260 MB, total mappack size: around 1 GB, full bot support)

Nations at War http://www.nations-at-war.com/

This mod is a really large thing, adding more than 130 new skins, tons of new weapons and massivly modifying the classes.
It features complete winter maps, having changed all uniforms and textures to fit.
It's basicly about hired guns aswell, and about intense infantery combat.
All classes are heavily overarmed (Sniper has a M50 and another sniper rifle, plus a mp5, grenades, the Merc MG gunner carries a MG36, grenades and a M16 assault rifle...)
but that makes a big part of the mods fun.
The maps are basicly all about close intown combat, fighting for a bridge and such.
Also some classes have smoke grenades, some have Flash bangs that really, really make you blind.
You should even download this mod just to see the effect, its eye burning.
(Current release: 3.9, size is 830 MB, Multiplayer only.)

As PRMM is widely known, I decided not to write about it, but for anyone interested
www.Project-Reality.com
All these mods require BF 1.3, and worked perfectly for me.
Now have fun playing

There is also a realism mod called Project Reality, but it's not very special.

Much more interesting is the mod Operation Peacekeeper, featuring the German Bundeswehr against the Croatian army.

Also definatly worth a download from what I heared, didn't play it yet though.

Hey you know they are making Forgotten Hope 2 for BF2.

I wish they would also make a 'realism' mod for BF2. Some of BF2 is just stupid - all the tanks are practically all the same (despite the fact that they are very different in real life). And they should put new weapons in like smoke grenade launchers on tanks. On top of that, the best tank in world (the German Leopard 2 tank) is pretty much identical to the Abrahms and the Challenger 2.

EA are getting a bit cheap now - they've just released the "Armoured Fury" expansion (only downloadable - stupidly) which gives you about 5 vehicles. Including a new jet, new chopper and the A10 Warthog (which is a real rip-off of other mods like DC from BF1942 - and the US intervention mod above). i reckon the new jet will be exactly the same as all the other jets (just it may look slightly different), and the new chopper will be almost exactly the same.

Yea, I'd never buy any of those EA addons, mods bring you the same, for free and (usually) better.

The A10 however is not the same as the other planes, its a groundsupport plane, designed to attack fortrifications, tanks etc.
It's slow and heavy armoured, and its Minigun can destroy tanks with a 3 second fireburst.

Yeh the addons are US$9.99 each - for hardly anything. With mods you can guarantee that they are made by people for enjoyment (not as much for money). I like many mods out there because they are professionally-made, by real gamers.
